OH MY GOD, people, please upload your avatars

The forum looks like it's inhabited by scores of ominous, shadowy, faceless weirdos. It's distracting, confusing, and aesthetically displeasing. Please upload your freaking avatars already.

I'm faceless even with an avatar.

Yeah but at least you have hair, and clothes. And a background with character.

It sometimes helps to leave instruction when ranting about something you wish others would do.

  • Go to your Profile
  • In the top bar will be a 150x150 square that is the "you are an anonymous white male in a button down shirt" gray avatar if you haven't uploaded one.
  • Click on it and follow the directions.

I already did it last night, but I agree that it's strange to see so many people dwell about it.

Do most people on here not use facebook? o_O I mean, it's basically a ripoff of facebook's profile picture system, it's not that hard to figure out...

Data collection and sharing.

Everything you've ever typed, whether or not it was sent or saved.

Everywhere you've been with whatever device you had ever accessed Facebook on, what you did while you were there, how long you used your device, your battery information, your purchases while you were there.

Everything you've ever bought if it wasn't cash.

Every app you've ever used, including banking apps.

I could go on, but that's actually horrifying enough, I think.  Especially considering that Facebook sells all this data.  You didn't think they were making the software free to you out of the goodness of their hearts, did you?

I say, if you can't beat em, you don't have to join them, but just accept that the fight is lost, for now, maybe forever.

I was preaching about this in chat recently. People going on about privacy. I told them that if anyone really wanted your information or photos they could have them already, without your consent even. So why try to hide? Why worry?

If we want to push for transparency in other areas, we should accept it in our own lives.

It's not about someone "wanting" your photos.  It's about choosing not to be used for other's purposes.  I wash my hands, use condoms when not fluid-bonded, and buckle up, too.

You can never completely protect yourself from  being used for other's purposes.

Sure, there are some steps you can take to lessen the chance of it happening, but it's always a possibility.

Risk mitigation is something that everyone has to judge for themselves.  I've seen what Facebook added into our customer's files.  I want absolutely no part of that.

Ooooh, now that's interesting. Care to share?

I worked for a multinational bank.  The information the bank got from Facebook included all content, not just the public stuff.  It was indexed and cross-referenced via algorithms so that purchasers could search things like "month users most likely to pay parking tickets" and "week users most likely to buy drug paraphernalia" and "users: relatives: facebook announcements: weddings: month of".  That last one caused a couple of Ethics Violations Hotline calls, let me tell you.

Anyway, the Facebook information at least tripled the amount of data in the files.  Some people used online banking and facebook and a whole bunch of other things, and we had all that data in the files too.  Not just our bank, either: facebook watches all the activity on your device.

Ugh.  I didn't want to come up on searches just because I bought an ultra-sensitive scale to weigh my spice mixes out, or have my porn searches used against me if some ultra-conservative asshole got into office, or get flagged because my seat was next to a guy whose name was similar to a guy who's on the Watchlist.

I guess I just have a hard time caring anymore.

I used to get all sorts of upset about online privacy, to the point that I didn't use facebook or any other social sites. But in all reality, there's nothing that I can personally do about it, so what's the point in hiding from it?

Either these things will be considered illegal once people wise up, or it will become the new norm.

I'm tired of worrying over certain things that I will never be able to control.
