I'm planning on buying a cheap house to live in in grad school, because I know I will be able to get most (if not all) of the money I put into the mortgage back when I sell the house after leaving grad school. If I payed rent for 5 years, I would not get that money back. However if I pay a mortgage I am effectively "paying myself," and when I leave grad school I can sell out and get all my "rent" money back.
