Reading the rituals (dont ask me how I made the leap) made me start to think of where it is that I do my best thinking. I came to realize that I seem to do my best thinking when I am sitting on the toilet with nothing to do but think. Then I realize I've been there for 20 mins. totally oblivious to everything else.

So I post the question: Where do you do your best thinking? (and I mean an actual physical place not in your HEAD! smarteleks)

*100th post!*

Toilet's a good one. Or anywhere else that's by myself. Mowing the lawn, walking, etc.

The toilet, no doubt. I came to say it when I saw the title.

Apparently, I'm not the only one then.

And even stranger, the smaller the toilet, the better. When I was little, I also liked to sneak under the bed, in a small window hole under the roof, and other narrow places. My mind is more motivated with smaller environments. Put me in a wide open field and I'm overwhelmed. It's not that I don't enjoy it, I love it, but I completely let go of any thinking abilities and become pure instinct. That's why I'm great to orient in new cities or to party at a huge concert. But my brain remains in the toilet.

Some of my most profound discoveries and ideas have been produced there. Um, ugh, no pun intended. Maybe if I was patient to spend more time there, I could have doubled the rate of my creativity, but I also don't like to 'waste time' there.

As cliche as it is, the toilet. Other than that, I get my best ideas when trying to go to sleep for the night in my bed. As I struggle to go to sleep..... EUREKA.

In bed when I'm trying to sleep. It's really annoying sometimes.

This can cause hemorrhoids. Especially if you are overweight.

My best thinking is almost always done at night when I'm alone. I also find that I think better when I'm doing something "automatic" - driving, walking, and so on. When trying to figure something out, I'll usually walk around the inside of my house, as strange as it sounds. I can't think nearly as well when I'm sitting down for long periods of time, and often get frustrated in an exam setting where I'm forced to stay seated. (I'm convinced my grades would be higher if I could take my tests alone at night with room to walk.

While cleaning, writing in my journal, or on a long long run (just me and my brain for a couple of hours). Mowing the lawn is a good one too, I wear earplugs and it increases my inward focus.

No place in particular..when deep in thought I tend to pace around a mumble to myself. It becomes particuarly amusing if I am taking a shower at the same time, since then I forget things like...if I just washed my hair or not...

To clarify, when I lie there for an hour every night before falling asleep.

If I'm stuck on something I find going for a walk helps me think it through.

I usually read when I am on the loo. My answer would be whenever I am alone and not reading. Believe it or not, this is usually in my office. I am alone at the office after 1700, can be deep in thought if the office is quiet.

My sanctuary. My room.

In a big gathering however, if I'm allowed to have materials and be let alone or ignored, I could just get to be very creative and do lots like writing, drawing, reading, solving puzzles or playing electronic games.

As odd as it might sound, I get good ideas while eating. For profound thought and pondering, I like to go for a walk or sit somewhere with a view.

And no, I am not creative or thoughtful while on the toilet.

By myself, between 8-10am, at the office where I work. This time of day is my peak time, mentally.

Where do my ideas come from/do my thinking?

#1. The shower.

#2. On the back of a tractor in the middle of a field.

#3. The drinking fountain.

#4. Half a second before I fall asleep in my bed.

Walking. I find giving my body something to do keeps it from getting restless and distracting me from my thinking. I just point myself in a direction pick a far away destination and flick on the autopilot. Off the body goes and it leaves me to focus on my internal thoughts. I just have to be careful with the auto pilot as I sometimes forget to watch for cars.

Most of my *best* thinking I do in my head.

Every once in a while, I think with my guts, but that's just so "Hillary Clinton" I try to keep it in check.

Me too! Especially the part about watching out for cars (or obstacles)!

In the laboratory, actively working with experiments. If no one's looking, I like to talk out loud. I also like using a blackboard/whiteboard to externalize my thinking and organize my thoughts.

In bed, late at night. My mind just races and I end up having to write stuff down, too many "aha!" moments. If I lay down before midnight it'll be 4am before I'll be able to fall asleep most nights.
