I still have mine. There was no pain or any problems with impacting when mine grew in so I didn't think much about it. I guess I've got a big mouth. I was reading about it a few days ago and it seems like most people get theirs cut out even if they're not a problem as a preventative measure.
So I'm wondering how many of you had yours cut out and what you think of preventative wisdom teeth removal (if anything). |

The top ones came in fine, but the pain was unbearable when the bottoms came in. So they just took 'em all out, not sure if it was necessary. The morphine and versed made it painless and fun.

I had my top two cut out a few years ago. It wasnt because they were becoming a problem but the dentist said that it could become one so I went ahead and had them removed.
I dont personally see a problem with preventative measures. If it can possibly save problems in the future take care of it now. But that also goes along with what you think the likelyhood of there being a problem is also. Does your dentist think that there could be? He would be the subject matter expert in that situation. |

My lower wisdom teeth were removed during a bunch of oral surgery when I was 16 (in preparation for braces -- whoo hoo!). The uppers were removed "in the chair" for preventive purposes in my early 30s. It was the only time in my life that I fainted and the prevention actually caused my once-aligned teeth to drift and make gaps. Lovely.

I come from a short line of family members who simply didn't have any to begin with. It's probably a good thing, as my back molars are right on the back of my jaw. There would simply be no room to have them.
I have a family member who is also missing her canines. |

I had all four removed. There was no pain involved because I was heavily drugged. Surprisingly I didn't experience any pain or noticeable swelling in the following days. My sister's situation was the exact opposite: lots of pain over many days and a ridiculously swollen jaw.

I had mine out at age 22. They were impacted so they had to come out. The worst part was not being able to think for the rest of the day due to the general anaesthetic. That was incredibly frustrating!

I had all 4 taken out at 33.
I had the fortune of getting into a quad accident, smashing all of my front teeth (except for the one that was expelled, and brutally shoved back in) into the roof of my mouth. I had to have all my wisdom teeth removed before they put the braces on. All 4 of them were impacted and the bottom ones were unfortunately wrapped around my jaw nerves. I still have a bit of a crooked bottom lip when I smile, and a loss of feeling in the bottom left side of my chin! What fun!! I kept the teeth (envelope please!) |

My wisdom teeth grew in perfectly well- but they really moved everything else around to do it. If I want the rest uncrowded, I have to have the wisdom teeth pulled.
Not looking forward to it- in large part because I hate having strange people literally up in my face. I could use some hefty drugs just to get through that part. |

I had my yanked out when I was 16 because they just weren't going to fit. I don't know what drugs they gave me but after they got me out of the chair, I vaguely remember crawling onto a counter in the hallway to lay down cause I was tired. (In full view of everyone in the lobby.)

My mother had one removed at age 30, age 40, and age 50. (Different one each time, though.)

All four still in, no problems. Every once in a while they come in about .5 cm and ache a little, then nothing more for another few years. There was lots of room, apparently I have a big mou...

All 4 of mine grew in by the time I was 12 and I had them all removed shortly after.

Had them pulled before they came in. There was room for them, but they were angled forward and would have knocked everything else out of whack (my teeth are otherwise pretty straight, didn't want to need braces for a long time).

My experience was a little odd. I was in boot camp and we all had to go get our teeth x-rayed and serviced, I'm in the dentist chair and a corpsman comes in and starts to shot my mouth up with pain killer. A little while later a dentist comes in and puts the x-rays on a light board and starts to examine my mouth he goes back to the x-rays and back to my mouth and looks at my chart and asks me my name and he looks at the chart and it's the right name just the wrong number so they get my chart and the dentist says "well nothing wrong with your teeth, but we can't waste the pain killer why don't we just pull out those wisdom teeth" Mine hadn't grown in yet so they perform oral surgery and extract all four at once. Needless to say I was not happy, I got light duty for a day and then had to go back to active duty as a boot Marine, that was not fun at all wads of cotton in my mouth, stitches and spitting blood, and having to yell responses I have never trusted dentist since.

I don't know when mine came in, but I had them all taken out this past May because the dentist said it would lead to problems if I didn't get them removed. I handled it pretty well, other than the day they came out.

All 3 were yanked out at 17 (they were all impacted). I didn't have a 4th one. According to the surgeon, some thing get dropped out of the genetic code.
Give me a break would ya? I can't remember his exact words. |

I have all of mine still. The bottom two are still waiting in my jaw, and the top two are slowly and painfully making their appearance (apparently giving me headaches during midterms is fun).
I actually had all four of the molars in front of my wisdom teeth extracted so that my braces would work. My mom was nice enough to schedule my surgery the day before my Christmas break started. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. The only good thing was I got my four molars in a cool tooth shaped plastic container. They were huge. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. If my wisdom teeth come in funny, or start impacting I will probably need to get them extracted too. This time I'll keep my teeth. |

I had all of mine removed when 17 or 18. It wasn't very traumatic, there was very little swelling, and I went to Disneyland the next day. I basically got confirmation that I'm hypersensitive to pain-killers though. The vicodin that they gave me for afterward knocked me out pretty effectively, so I stopped taking it after the two doses.
