Mind mapping sounds a lot like extraverted intuition. But is it actually useful?

I make a new mind map every week and update it daily.

They have helped me achieve a lot of my goals in the past few years. I have a poor memory due to a mispent youth, so writting things downs serves a few purposes for me.

It also helps with pattern recognition, so I'll be able to determine what goals are actually realisting and attainable and which ones aren't really feasible.

Worth doing I reckon.

For people who can't naturally organize and structure their thoughts, yes it is useful. otherwise it seems more like a waste of time.

f you look at the video, mind-mapping is when you lay out ideas, in a structure that connects them all to the original subject, either directly, or indirectly via other connected ideas. Making something subject-oriented is how Jung described introversion. Consequently, mind-mapping is introverted intuition.

Ni-doms find mind-maps very useful. They represent everything in terms of what it means to the subject. So when you look at a mind map, it will show you what is more useful to the subject. So mind maps show you what would be more useful to do, to achieve as much of the subject as possible. So it's very useful, when your goal is the subject. Accordingly, mind-maps are tools where one chooses one's goal, and then designs a new mind-map for the goal. Then many useful things become clear, that would help one to improve the system to achieve much more of one's goal, making the system much more efficient in terms of achieving one's goal.

I don't like mind-mapping, or at least not the tools I've seen so far. It may just be the dependency on a tool which puts me off, though.

I do have a similar way of organizing everything, and it's been a standard for me for the past..maybe 10 years by now. It's a really simple format, and it's proven to work really well and it's simple to use on paper, in a text file, email, whatever. I literally can't even imagine how I would deal with my life's organization without it, now. I use it to keep track of projects, tasks in those projects, my daily schedule, workout routines, fucking everything.

It's a simple hierarchical structure, which mind-maps basically are the same sort of thing.

So.. I guess my point is, fundamentally, mind-maps seem just as useful to Ni as Ne - even though, I don't like the typical incarnation of the mind-map concept.

But is it actually useful?

If you don't have better methods at hand... sure, why not?
In some peoples' hands it probably can find a use.

Even if it is charting abstract themes as a memory assistant and organizer.

I agree with your logic for calling mind maps introverted intuition.

I made a mind map once and I found it helpful. I had been struggling for a long time with writing a science paper. The paper had many interrelated parts such that changes in one section would require changes in other sections, and many, many details. On the advice of a writing manual, I started writing down all the different parts of the paper - sections, analyses, details, findings, evidence, etc. - and then connecting them with lines. I had to start over several times in order to fit everything onto one page without too many erasures.

In retrospect, I found the map useful because I had been getting caught up on details, and the map allowed me to see the big picture as I was filling in details. So, perhaps ironically, I found a mind map useful because I'm an Ne-dom (I believe) and the tool helped me to focus like an Ni.
