HDD singular read error/symptomology None

Had a read error this morning (W7, 64bit, Home Premium).

The first symptom was FF browser would execute repetitive reads to a site, resulting in the page flashing. There's a bit more to the description but I'll hold off on that now.

Within a few seconds of that symptom, I rebooted. At that time a read error was reported, right after accessing the DVD drive in the POST routine.

The disk is on weekly backup. The disk was put into service about a year ago (have to look up records to be more specific). The disk gets almost daily usage.

Any suggestions ?
