I'm about to purchase a new processor and I've been out of the loop for the last year. This will be the first time I've owned an Intel processor since the Pentium III.
I'm looking at purchasing an i5. I'm keeping my budget between 200 and 230 dollars. I want to overclock the CPU and use the stock cooler. I would prefer the CPU gets more overclock on less heat. I also want the processor to behave with a gigabyte board and some g.skill ripjaw x memory. What is generally more recommended in i5 land, sandy or ivy bridge? Which i5 for each bridge is recommended? |

Your budget is tough honestly. The majority of all the i5 processors, IB or SB, are around 200$ alone without a motherboard.

The P67 was the common sandy bridge chipset and it has officially been discontinued. The Z77 and Z75 are the common IB chipsets people will buy. Budget aside, I would personally go with a Z77 Ivy Bridge Chipset MOBO. My cousin just bought one for 100$. He went all out and got the i5 3570K which you can get for around 200$. Sometimes places like microcenter have bundle deals and you can get both for around 300$. For 200$ though, I'm not sure what you can really do. i5's are 200$ alone.
Do you mean you already have a board? Or you looking to buy a gigabyte board? If you already have a board that already determines what you can or can't do for you. |

Actually, this was the budget for the CPU. Sorry for the confusion. My full budget is about 400 dollars for a CPU, motherboard, and memory.
I don't have the board yet. I've had good experience with gigabyte, so I'm prone to buy them. |

You can get all three for 400-450$ depending on tax / deals.
As far as MOBO is concerned, To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. this is neweggs list of Ivy Bridge Z77 Mobos. You can get a decent one for 100$ depending on what specs you want. Just a note, IB is still relatively 'new' so there aren't as many options as SB but there are still great choices out there. Pick some stuff you like and post it here. |

I think I'd rather stick to a z77. I need CPU recommendations. I understand the motherboard easily enough.

If you want to overclock, I would take the 3570k over the 3570. You can get it for around 230$ on newegg.
And if you happen to have a microcenter near you they have a sweet deal for 190$ - To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. You would have to do a bit of research on what kind of cooling it requires after a certain overclock speed. After contemplating the heat difference between the 2500k (lower cooling and higher clock and 3570k, I got to thinking: I wasn't going to clock the thing past four as I care for my equipment, and the 3570 gets me into a better motherboard. I found a great combo deal with the asrock z77 extreme 4 and 3570k for 330 bucks.

If you haven't bought it and live near a microcenter, their bundle is pretty much the cheapest way to get a z77 and 3570k.

Edit: I was about to recommend an AMD 8150 but change my mind.
