Interesting. If they do indeed have the right algorithm the system will continue to learn and eventually will become self aware.

Kinda possible, although unlike a human - that thing has no self that it needs to be protecting. A lot of our issues with self come with having to protect this body.

Computers can be switched off, and have their power source cut.

Think Skynet:

We have also evolved through selection of humans who will violently respond to perceived threats. If we don't craft neural networks to do the same, they likely won't. It's hard for us to imagine something that is both intelligent but also has no intrinsic motivations.

That is another paradox though, because if an ANN has no intrinsic motivation, then it wouldn't be terribly useful...

What if 90% of the internet is porn, watched by cats?

I like mixing with INTJ's.

The neural network was impressive in that:

It performed far better than any previous effort by roughly doubling its accuracy in recognizing objects in a challenging list of 20,000 distinct items.

This reminds me of a study on a neural network which was done some time ago, where it was programmed to diagnose a specific disease, except this network was noticeably superior to medical doctors in recognizing that particular malady.

Tried looking around a bit. There seemed to be various prognosis concerning disease?
