I've seen this in several commercials. Buying x is smart, ad targeting women. I've heard women use this in the context of it being desirable. Just for shits and giggles I've offered it as a compliment to see how it would be received. Women like it. 'Gee that is smart of you to do.'

What do you make of this?

Because some might be tired of "in the kitchen" or "make me a sandwich" jokes...?

It may be a growing trend (or marketing fad) based on the fact that it is a very atypical compliment to give to women. Give the old concepts of womanhood a few more years to complete their death spiral and it won't be an odd comment at all. But to be honest, "That was smart of you" isn't even a comment I hear get thrown at guys that much. Maybe I just don't hear it in my part of the country (the south).

Common sense.

Advertisers have noticed that more women are attending college than men.

Women are going to better educated and better paid than their male counterparts in the near future.

Because it gone get dem dat $$$, to then buy food to put all up in dey moufs.

Think about the average american...they don't really think about what they hear...they don't nit pick word choice because they dismiss it via saying "semantics..." Then factor in that humans get flattered vury vury easily, especially when it's a quality they have already identified with but feel like others have yet to see their untapped treasures and hidden potential (could be a poor perception of skill, and they actually just suck and are unskilled...who knows).

Now, sum all dat shit up. Then tack on that the quality of "smart" is associated with that object...you gone have some dumb-masses bout to spend all dey muney on sum fukin bitch nigga product dat ain't gone do nuttin fo dem except leab dem mo and mo empty inside. And that's life ^______^.

Like, seriously...it'd take SO much to educate America. Giant shifts in education systems, educating the teachers who are educating (can't have The Dumb leading The Blind)...that's the only reason I don't HATE advertisers. They're just making a living and happen to be aware of how ignorant the masses truly are. Terrifying, isn't it? Just another perk of being an INTJ (the no-bullshit/question everything to death trait~)

OR

They could actually be sincere in telling women they're smart for doing that. ^_____^

Or Both

Or for an entirely unmentioned/unknown reason~.

Imagine how ridiculous a "Why is there a push for people to be perceived as smart" thread would be.

Jesus.

Jesus Almighty.

It's more a desire to make men look dumb and immature. White, straight, Christian males are the punching bag of society.

The key word is perception, not the actual thing.

Kind of what I'm thinking. Why appear smart when you ARE smart? If you have confidence in yourself there should be no reason to try to 'appear' smart, because you are smart in the first place. However, if you weren't 'smart' or you wanted to impress someone, then i could see someone attempting to appear smart. I still find appearances such as this superficial.. Sorry for going off on a random tangent there.

Appeal to Ego

It's one of the oldest advertising schemes in existence. Why do you think Cadillac commercials have some attractive dude in a suit driving around a blond bombshell? The message is "Drive this car, get hot woman" - appeal to the male ego.

Where does one go to meet a smart woman? There are lots on this forum who reckon they are smart, but I just don't fancy them. Too aggressive and not enough femininity.

HOLY CRAP, women want to be acknowledged as being intelligent?

FUCK that's a novel idea! LET'S MAKE A THREAD ABOUT HOW STRANGE THAT IS!!!!

This thread -- and the male apologists whining in it -- are about as surprising as the sun rising. I'm looking forward to when that changes.

Conversely, I've met plenty of women who say they are turned on by intelligence.

In reality, they are thinking of witty TV characters (Like Doctor Who) and they don't really know how intelligence can be expressed IRL.

What I'm saying is that perhaps you are overlooking a large percentage of intelligent women because what you perceive as intelligent is too narrow in scope.

Women are just as intelligent as men and most people are average. It's not sexist if the product is intended for a certain audience for whatever reason. It just appears to be sexist because they are appealing to ego - as most people believe they are more intelligent than average.

Gender really has nothing to do with it. There are plenty of ads appealing to male intellect, especially on CNN... "Smart traders use E-Trade" type stuff. (Though I guess that is gender-neutral since plenty of women manage finances today)

Appealing to ego is gender-neutral.

Hmm, you present an interesting problem. How can one diagnose the placement of the box when one cannot look outside of it. If my senses cannot detect their properties then I would be inclined to reject them having such properties. In the same manner that I dismiss those claiming psychic powers. This is always subject to change pending further information.

Nah, there are just aren't enough smart people around in general and they are hellishly tough to meet. To seem smart, to you, they have to be x-amount smarter than you. That means if you are in the top 10%, then a smart guy will be one in thousand. Its a tail end effect. That's why you never get to meet him or her.

OK. So lets get practical. Where to pick up smart chicks? What do smart chicks like doing? You won't find them over at physics.org solving their differential equations. There are no 'smart chick' bars where you buy them 200mls of some ethanol solution. They seem to be stealthy. Perhaps one should adopt the mind of the hunter and set 'smart chick' traps to catch them.

I actually meet a lot of smart attractive women. Too bad they often come with a side of demanding, stubborn, or wanting a bad boy or wanting a guy who's more emotionally available or entitlement.

Smart is relative. If your IQ is over 110, whereby the average IQ floats around 100, you are relatively smart.

As far as wanting to be perceived as 'above average' for anything viewed as socially positive, why not if you are? It is pretty amusing that an INTJ would even ask this question beyond the underlying assumption that women aren't smart and it's all a con job.

Smart women exist. So do average women and so do dumb fucks. No different than men.

Seems to me the advertising has nothing to do with actually being smart or even appearing to be smart. Only with whether people (women in this case) like to be told that they are smart.
I don't think anyone wants to be told they're stupid.

Because you don't want to be seen as a liar if you're not smart and want to appear to be. But I suppose you can take your chances.

Nothing.

I perceive a person as "smart" if said subject displays worthy intelligence. Having a penis or a vagina does not matter. Commercials are marketing - it's a ploy, a gimmick - designed only to get sticky fingers inside your wallet. If it'll separate a woman from her money, the salesmen of this world will happily attach faux intelligence to the use of certain products or items to sell them.
