Destroy our entire Solar system. If aliens exist and if they are watching us, just imagine the view. You can bet they'd scream "AWESOME!"

Human landing on Mars is the obvious one.
Terraforming and colonizing a new planet (probably Mars) or the moon
Perfecting synthetic biology to allow for complete bottom-up designing of organisms.
Creating super-human artificial intelligence.
Reversing aging
Reading single-neuron signals non-invasively (would have awesome implications)

Yeah, why not USSR again...together with China (and Cuba/North Korea) = world revolution!

Big deal, every POS in my vicinity has got "made in China" written on it.

Capitalism/communism is a joke.

Props to Dru et al for taking the battlefield inside. But those changes would necessarily be process and not event-scale WOW. So for spectacles, I'd suggest either:
  1. find life beyond Earth
  2. create self-replicating life from inorganic "soup" on Earth
Life outside Earth would be moon-landingish WOW, but my guess is we'll make (re)productive soup first. The first soup recipe is apt to be underwhelming, unfortunately, like comparing a vacuum tube computer to an internet connected cell phone. So I'm hoping for #1.

Mining the moon would be a good start. It will likely happen.

While seemingly awesome, this is just an expensive form of mass extinction.

The internet is definitely the most awesome human accomplishment to date. It doesn't evoke that immediate emotional reaction that the moon landing did/does, but when you give it some thought...yea. Granted, the space race was largely responsible for the birth of the internet.

Going forward, most of the good ones have been taken- breaking the laws of physics, porting consciousness., etc. But rather than these things, I think that the most awesome thing the human race could do would be to put every ten year old on a space flight, that is, instill a sense of awe in our children.

I think it would be very difficult for anything to shock anyone or to make them stand in awe in our time, because people are bombarded by "shocking" things all the time. 9/11 may not have been considered a human "achievement", but it ranks pretty high in the shock factor. Humans.....Americans at least, tend to not stand in awe of science unless the project is large scale and everyone is watching it on TV.

The first ten candidates I can think of (don't underestimate the imagination of movie/TV show creators):

1. I agree with you that contact with aliens would definitely do it.
2. A real life Jurassic Park.
3. The completion of a ladder or elevator to the moon. (not as likely to shock as the first two)
4. The creation of a time machine and subsequent proof of its functionality. Followed by the destruction of all human civilization (ha ha).
5. Discovery that any of the natural laws of our universe can be broken.
6. Travel to a parallel universe.
7. Prove the existence of a soul by attaching it to knight's armor that happens to be in your house. It will be continue to be your brother and walk around.
8. Break the speed of light.
9. Special Beam Cannon.
10. Find out how to get self replicating life from non life and run through the streets yelling "God is dead!"

I need you in my life.

Oh, and to build a hollow, spherical dome around our planet and give it artificial sun lamps. No more time zones.

I bet it would be feasible to build a network of big ol' mirrors in orbit to reflect sunlight to the surface. They could certainly be adjustable to focus the light wherever you want. Would be useful for farming, or maybe lighting up cities at far latitudes during winter.

Focus it enough and maybe you could even fry somebody...

Develop Artificial Intelligence that can continually improve itself, and then merge with it. Or maybe develop nano-electro-mechanical devices, or some such, that increase the processing speed of the brain.

Manage to get along as one humanity with a common ideology of scientific progress and personal freedom instead of competing and fighting wars for the biggest share of limited resources or the best imaginary friend.
