Easy to see why it would be riveting to many women. Good looking muscle-bound guy (I thought it was Ryan Reynolds at first), the sexy fireman thing, stereotypical masculinity, long intense gazes into the camera, the slightest 'soft' side thing with the kitten and all, a touch of humour, etc...

It seems pretty formulaic to me.

Heterosexual Female Gaze?

While yes it does induce reactions, it is not parallel of the Male Gaze.

The formula was "cheeky but not cheesy", which is not exactly formulaic in that it's rather novel to use humor & sex to sell things to women. 5-8 years ago this tequila ad would have been laughed out of the pitch meeting. Even the Brawny ad with the kitten was pulled off the air, and that was selling a heteronormatively female product... hell, I can't even find it on YouTube.

In a strict sense, I see what you're saying. The power differential is not there, so the 'gaze; concept falls a bit short. Other than that, it's pretty much identical.

Nah, it's nothing new. We've already had mention of the old spice commercials in this thread. While not a product being sold to women per se, it's a pretty similar strategy. Also recall the witty Philly Cream Cheese 'man-servant' ads from the 90s. Nothing new, here. These kinds of ads run down the list of stereotypical "sexy" male traits. It's as formulaic as it comes. This ad may be a slightly different take because it's running through that list in a slightly over the top obvious way... at least it was obvious to me.

From a sex sells perspective, an ad like this appeals more to me than outright sexual content in some ads or in porn. And while I appreciate what was revealed, the bare chested pic wasn't even necessary.

Part of the appeal is the whimsical nature of this ad.

The only part of this advert that I enjoyed was the kitten, which distracted me from the rest of it because omgcanIcuddleitpleaseit'ssocute.

I guess the guy was attractive. I wasn't attracted to him.

I like bright and fuzzy and wide-eyed.

Kitten didn't do anything for me either, though at least it was fuzzy, so 2 out of 10 for trying. Maybe if it had been a rabbit instead.

And who the hell puts beer in a margarita?

It's times like these I realize just how damn far off I'm from the typical heterosexual radar. I genuinely probably would have found that ad sexier had it featured a woman, and I *am* a heterosexual female.

But that was kitten was adorableistic

Hmm. Overall, no. Although the guy was pretty cute physically.
There is somthing about the way he's interacting with the audience that i find unappealing, however. My opinion is that even though he's obviously very aware and deliberate of his every movement, he's not succeeding in being totally 'smooth' (which it also seems to me that he's striving for).

I think his lack of total smoothness is precisely why this add is so effective. He pauses, he kind of almost seems a bit nervous. I think it makes him seem a bit more human and appear more 'sensitive' to some degree.

Overall I found it entertaining and can see why the ladies would like it. It kind of breaks the fourth wall in a cheeky way where it draws attention to it being a kind of a cheesy add and so dosen't come across as cheesy or like it's trying to hard.
