(re-copied from my blog, cause it might make a neat thread)

Why is it that so many Audi drivers always tailgate and make sharp turns uncomfortably close to other cars.

I know an Audi driver. People door his car all the time, and tend to act like a jerk to him on the road. Yet he also fits the Audi driver stereo type. I tell him he drives like a mad man and he has it coming. He says he's just making the most of driving his car, and that he doesn't mean to come off as an ass on the road.

Thing is, the Audi driver is a very passive, meek, and kind person. He always whines that not all Audi drivers are jerks and he knows for sure he isn't a jerk. But when he gets in to his car, it's like another personality comes out of him, because he's driving an Audi.

I said sarcastically... This is like Yu-Gi-Oh!. You're this passive meek guy, but when you get in to your Audi, the spirit of the car takes over and the road becomes a game. I call this situation Audi-Oh!

Audi-Oh!

I only see teenage girls drive them in my area; I am guessing they do not do a whole lot of caring.

Here it applies to BMW and Toyota Prius (Yes; that specific model), but not AUDI.

Hey, Uncle Mort - I resemble that remark!
BMW lover here. Something about BMWs (and presumably Audi's for others) brings out my wild child need for speed. Otherwise, I'm generally a professional, reserved, polite type of person...
I think it is related to the connection you feel with the car and confidence in it's abilities. I "know" my car can double the recommended/posted speed on just about any road or curve, and my repressed disregard for authority is straining to bust free!
Do you think there is a connection between MBTI type and driving style?

Being an auto tech, I'm opinionated about this stuff.

To generalize in one sentence? Most drivers of premium brands (Audi, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, etc) are assholes once behind the wheel on a highway. The fact that a person owns an Autobahn-capable car in the US does not exempt one from good road manners, and that seems to be their biggest problem.

I actually have more issue with people driving POS cars than any premium car. I don't see what's so hard about not hogging the fast lane such that they can go. Then you're rid of them. Problem solved. This is coming from a guy who has 2 cars capable of over 150MPH and 5.5 second 0-60 times.

I'm an Audi driver and Audi observer. I do not find that Audi drivers are any worse than the general population. Actually, IMO, pick-up truck and SUV drivers are the worse drivers by a country mile.

I have an Audi. I drive fast. I take corners fast. I know what my car is capable of. That is why I bought it.

What I do not do:

1. Tailgate. I drive my car like my motorcycle to maintain reaction times.
2. Distract myself with a cell phone in the ear
3. Lane weaving

Know your limits, keep focused, and have fun.

Also, cars do not even compare to motorcycles. Way. More. Fun.

There you have it. Wannabe race care drivers, adrenaline junkies - selfishly focused on their own experience of a shared road.

I have more of an issue with drivers of giant pickup trucks. Rude!!!! Hardly ever fails. Get a man behind the wheel of a large truck and he turns into an animal.

Yeah, I tend to tense up and start shaking when giant pickup trucks are with me on the road. I find ways to just let them pass me and stay far away.

Yup, fully agree with you on this one, Z.

It's also best not to drive in a way that frightens any timid drivers around you. When the opportunity presents itself, you maneuver your way around them ensuring your moves aren't unexpected, where there's plenty of space.

I'd say selfish is a SUV/truck driving the speed limit. The braking distances and handling do not compare to a ferarri, which, apparently, has to drive the same speed.

Go ahead and argue it.

I drive a BMW and sometimes I'm a jackass and sometimes I'm patient and courteous. I like to think the overall ratio is no more than 10% jackass and at least 90% decent driver, but some days are worse than others. The badge on my car doesn't generally affect how I drive, though having something that moves and can turn well isn't something I let go to waste.

Plenty of other people drive like jackasses around me: "Oh look, a guy speeding in his BMW that I will never be able to afford. Let me pull out right in front of him so he can test his brakes. Then I'll drive 10 under the speed limit and wonder why he's being such a jerk and tailgating me. He's just a typical asshole in a BMW."

I haven't noticed this.

I think that jerks behave like jerks behind the wheel of a car...
