Trashy and shocking news. Reminds me of why I ignore common newspapers, and of who knows what effect these things have on people's minds.

Seriously, stuff like

could have no positive impact on people's minds. Especially the dumb people that this rag is targeted towards anyway. At best this stuff helps perpetuate a reality that does not need to be perpetuated.

It's all just words. No one can be certain of their effects or intent.

Tragedy sells, no one gives a shit when things are sunny.

The 'SECRET PERVERTED SEX LIVES OF PENGUINS' made me laugh, though.

Completely agree with your evaluation of the content.

But I think it's outrageous to say this is why you ignore newspapers without distinguishing between that trash and publications like the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, etc.

If a reader can't derive value from the Wall Street Journal or Financial Times, well that's just as much a statement about audience as that publication is.

Well true enough. I don't read regular newspapers. I mostly read things in areas that I think will either be directly useful or where I expect to learn something.

A person's environment does impact their morals and standards however. If you think people are crappy, its much easier to be crappy yourself.
