At work my coworkers often get angry when people act stupid and are rewarded for it. I just view it as par for the course. Part of my job is to deal with it. Some of my coworkers think it shouldn't be that way and they get frustrated and annoyed. What do you think of this phenomenon?

I tend to agree. For a lot of jobs, it seems to be less about what you know and more about who you know (or how you showcase yourself, if you're good at that sort of thing), so I'm not terribly surprised when people who aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree get promotions and raises.

No, I don't think most people are stupid.

What I do think, though, is that people often don't understand what all is required to be awarded or promoted. It's amazing how many people think that because they are an expert at their current position that they should get an award for that or get promoted.

To stupid people smart people are stupid.

Look at the idiots running the world, its all about emotion, which is then rationalized with logic.

Because I'm above average intelligence I'm used to being smarter than a random person, but I'm aware theirs plenty of people smarter than me, that its not a good idea to judge people random, that people can surprise you, and that even people of average or below average intelligence are capable of smart moments. And I'm also aware anyone, no matter how smart they are can screw up.

I agree. Why should I waste my time getting frustrated or annoyed because the world isn't perfect?

Deal with it and move on.

I think that's a bad idea.

Every personality has a perspective on things, and often those who we view as "stupid" have insight because they see things differently than we do.

A person who considers other people stupid might even be considered stupid by other people as well. It all boils down to the consequences of one's "stupid" act. If the result is good, it would be stupid to judge the person and the act as stupid.

Oh, I used to be rather annoyed at people who got promotions or raises though I thought they were not highly competent. Then I realized that in some workplaces what gets you promoted is getting noticed. So what is "smart"? Technical smarts or people smarts?

I, probably like a lot of INTJs, am not naturally good at schmoozing. I took the time and made an effort to improve my schmoozing abilities. Interestingly, I no longer dread working in groups.

I can't say I was angry though, since I always got the best raise in a group anyway, I didn't want to be promoted into any form of management beyond project management anyway, and anger every year I get older I realize more and more what a waste of time it is. Oh sure I get angry, but if I can't change what I'm angry over, it's time to let go and move on to something I can do that would be useful.

Being haughty and, specially, showing it won't bring you(or your coworkers) much benefits.

Just play the game and, if you are really smart and astute, learning what they do and surpassing them should represent no problem.

I'm not sure I can label so many people as stupid. I'd say a lot of people make poor decisions, either out of emotion or ignorance, but they aren't really stupid. They may not always know as much as I do in my fields of interest or they may not always use the best reasoning, but that doesn't make them stupid. Besides the word loses its meaning if you use it too much, and then you find some of the actually stupid people and what would you call them?

Hell, I must be stupid to some people. I'm awful at math and I hate playing the game, so I can't be truly smart.

I used to think everyone was as smart as, or smarter than me. Up to about 3 years ago I believed that anything I could understand is something that anyone else can too. I think my job, online gaming, and internet forums have been a big contribution to my enlightenment. As far as most people being ignorant rather than stupid, as stated by Warrior, I think that ignorance is a symptom of stupidity.

It doesn't bother me when other people act stupid on the job.

I am a university student and have had many crappy minimum wage jobs, such as waitressing, and have been considered stupid by plenty of people for being spaced out and irresponsible and slow at work.

Am I actually stupid? maybe in the category of waitressing, yes.

I try not to think anything negative about people so I don't usually think of others as being stupid. When I think negative things about people it makes my heart sink and makes me miserable. I just can't do this.

Stupid? No. But what I have realised is that most people don't perceive life or situations the way I do.

There is a difference between stupid, unlearned and the inability to think well.

Most people are not the former.

A good friend of mine and fellow INTJ believes in a modified Pareto principle: 97% of the people share 3% of the intelligence. There are times I have a hard time finding a flaw with that.

I do get abstractly angry when bad behavior is rewarded - it offends my sense of justice and it clashes with my drive for optimization. Whether anyone else is aware of that opinion, I don't know.

Personally, I am biding my time until I am in charge - then the system will be fixed.

If you mean stupid in terms of incapable thinking better, then no. Unfortunately, I tend to assume that most people are indeed intelligent creatures with a brain that is able to function reasonably well, but that the owner and manager is simply too lazy and immature....and over-indulged by others, to use it well.

In addition, I also realize that some people have more developed minds and are better educated than others in terms of quality, quantity, breadth, depth, integration, and effective utilization of knowledge and skills.

Some people see their brain as their magic golden key to everything, while others spend their lives trying to forget that they have one.

We are all ignorant to some extent about something. We are not all-knowing, all- understanding gods.

The ridiculous carelessness that often passes as supposed "thinking" for many people is not necessarily a "stupid" strategy in social structures that tend to motivate, reward, and thus perpetuate such thinking and behavior. It becomes a valuable way of thinking and being, even though we can rightfully argue that such "thinking" is less intelligent in terms of strict standards of formal critical thinking skills and certain standards of moral decency.

When people who seem stupid get rewarded for their behaviour, I try to reconsider the wisdom of my own actions.

It's perfectly possible for (intellectually) stupid people to get ahead by virtue of useful personality traits, such as a positive attitude or the ability to rote-memorise lots of information. Sometimes they do well in relationships because they don't ask themselves too many questions. Hence it is worth trying to see which of their behaviours are useful only by chance or in the short term, and which are actually worth imitating.

Excellent...you made me go look up and learn something...it's actually the 80/20 rule...

That said, there are some 1 percent rules out there worth looking into..

There are stupid people out there, but many people are simply "differently smart".

The question is not are they stupid compared to you, but do you value the things they are good at.
