I know I'm straying from the spelling/grammar focus here, but how do people feel about the recent trend (again, in my circles) to addressing diverse audiences in emails as "folks"? A tad too folksy for my taste.

I agree. "All ya'alls" is much better.

I do it all the time around here. You don't like "y'all" either, I'll bet. I wouldn't do it in a formal/business email, but I like to give a not-so-serious tone to my other types of communication, so yeah.

It's such a deviant spelling of supersede. Brings to mind colonial war games.

'I supercede you Finland, for Vladivostok and three barrels of smoked pork.'

I am not very good with grammar and punctuation. This thread makes me feel insecure and inferior.

I got one.

You mean he like, like like, like likes me?

Perfect grammar.

Meh, I don't like it either for the same reason.

Here is my grammatical tosser: take v. bring. E.G., "Hey, let's bring some beer when we go to the party". WRONG-O! Movement of something from the point of departure = take. Movement of something from the point of arrival = bring.

I think "folks" works well in the right context. Here's the latest post in Paul Krugman's blog:

Folks, this isn’t an article about New York, where three-quarters of public-sector workers are unionized. It’s about Texas, where only one in five public workers belongs to a union. Blaming unions for the problems of Texas is like, well, blaming Jews for the problems of Japan: there aren’t enough of them to matter.

Before you mock me, walk in my shoes:

Folks, don't enter a premise unless you feel absolutely safe doing so.
Edit: Never enter premises unless ...
Just sayin', y'all!

And if supercede starts to be accepted, I'm officially moving to the woods to live as a bitter curmudgeon.

Now, I know what you're thinking; you're thinking, "Did he really say, 'enter a premise'?" Sadly, yes. At my workplace, premises has become corporately converted to premise. It's right there in the software. It's on the "New premise" form. "Will you be opening a new premise today, ma'am?" Do I need to explain why I'm looking for a new job? Smileys or smilies? I've always preferred smileys, but is it right?

Dictionary.com doesn't recognize smilie as legit, but Wikipedia describes it as a "variant" that is "not as common" as smiley.

I also prefer smiley.

ADDED: And as for the plural form (probably what you were talking about, now that I think about it), Dictionary.com only recognizes smileys, but Wikipedia notes that smilies (plural) is more "commonly used" than smilie (singular).

If not all of them smile, then how can they all be labeled smileys?

Smilies would be the plural of smily, which does not exist.

To me it doesn't really matter if the smileys smile or not. "Emotion icons" make me think of touchy feely pop artists.

So is "ironical" a legitimate use of the word? Seems like "ironic" gets the job done, but I see the former usage a lot.

That's just how the hipsters say "ironic" now. They are running out of deck options.
