Funeral service, more specifically the embalming aspect of it.

Sure I get to have some psychological fun every now and then, but for the most part, just the entire embalming process is amazing and fascinating. It's so multifaceted. Each case is unique and different, requiring skill, precision, loads of knowledge, and knowing exactly what you're doing and why. It requires you to think, analyze, and rethink after every step you take.

Nobody else happens to work in the funeral service industry, do they?

If not, does anybody have any questions, concerns, or myths they need clearing up? I'd be more than happy to educate you on the matter.

I have an uncle who used to run a funeral service and do that type of work and he enjoyed it from what I know, also was able to retire comfortably. I hope you have the same experience. Just don't make a new case of Deadchan!

My Grandfather had a very successful funeral home in Connecticut. There are other embalmers sprinkled throughout our family. Ironically,I had this little job about three years ago delivering flowers and I walked into many funeral homes to put flowers next to dead bodies and I never even flinched...must be my genes.

dude, that's gotta be a cool @ss job...

think about it:
Career Day, Bring your Parents;

"and who did you bring, tommy?"

"i brought my dad."

"can we have him come up and explain to the class what he does?"

the kids stare nervously at the quiet blank-stared gentleman at the back of the class as he slowly stands up, his pitch black close-cut silk funeral service slacks and jacket creased and pressed without a blemish. the gentleman slowly approaches the front of the class in measured footsteps and turns to face the class. not a sound was to be heard as the class is watching in awe as the gentleman looks at them and smiles with an icy grimace. clasping his hands in front of him, he simply says,

"i work with dead people."

the looks of awe turn into looks of horror...

i mean, what not to like? that would be awesome... i actually thought about doing that too... heh, but changed my mind as i tend to lean more towards technical things...

It's arguably the worlds oldest profession... It's also one that is not likly to hit a total rescession. You can reasonably count on a steady supply of business.

Sweet.

How did you get the job? For someone with no background, what kind of education would they need and how long are these courses usually? (I've been seriously playing with the idea for a while.)

Unless you hate dead things, like me! I dont "think" I would pass out or vomit etc... but I would likely want to leave ASAP.

On to the questions / myths!
Do dead people sometimes twitch or have muscle movements?
My uncle who owns a funeral home says cremation is utterly nasty, is this true? As in bubbling and popping, fat run off, then having to grind the bones up when ur done etc...?

I also considered the funeral service when I was approaching my senior year in high school. Then I decided that I lack the interpersonal skills to be a mortician! No seriously, dealing with highly emotional people at a particularly sensitive time in their life, many of them are very religious--especially when someone dies. I am an athesit. And, I don't think that I would like the dress code. I'm pre-med currently. Embalming would be good, but I think would get a little boring after a while. Good luck to ya!!
