It's clear that it's pretty easy to surround yourself with good writing and good tunes.
But my request is simple - I need bad stories and songs so I can see where MY songs and stories compare to them. I don't claim to be a professional, but I think that I've evolved quite a bit with my fiction writing (the music I play is just a hobby, but input is always helpful) and that to see examples of what bad writing is can be just as important as recognizing good writing (and all art in general. All THINGS in general). So yeah, show me what you've found. I've done google searches, but it just led me to gimmick sites that 'teach' you how to write. By the way! I don't mean stuff like mainstream music and the Twilight stories. I'm looking for writing by people who are trying to make it, close to a point where I'm at. I need to see what the other side of the competition is like. Weird request, but yeah, there it is. |

This song was written by a man old enough to be her father. Really, really bad when you consider this.

What you talking about? Macarthur Park is genius. "Someone left the cake out in the rain" -- one of the best lyrics ever. |

Look around. There is plenty of terrible writing. If you cannot properly analyze fictional works and tell if they are good or not, you will likely struggle in producing anything great yourself.
This isn't meant as negative criticism, but rather as advice on what you should be doing. Analyze stories. Look at the big picture. Ask yourself what a specific author did or didn't do to either engage your interest, or kill it. Don't bother asking others what "top notch" fiction looks like--there isn't always a correlation between what is good fiction and what the public is told is good fiction. The goal of creative writing is to evoke emotions within the reader. Find works that have had this effect upon you. This goes for elements such as style, pacing, and overall structure as well. Edit: I should add that both writing and music is highly subjective. Asking for a definitive answer is bound to fail. I recently stumbled across a metal band called Sybreed. I generally don't care for metal, but this band is absolute genius. However, I'm guessing if you ask most folk, it just sounds like a bunch of yelling and loud noises To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. I've never heard that song. It is brilliant! Although probably 'cause I watched it as a parody :D |

Any romance novel where the plotline is focused on romance, instead of subplot. They're fucking annoying.

^ or adversely when the subplot is so bad you wish they'd just stuck to the romance.

It works much better as poetry if you take it completely literally. |
