An incredibly dumb question, not sure where to put it.

I've been apprehensive to share my interest in this, and I've only openly shared it with a few people (who are male and notably older than I) but no longer being in my teens, it seems as if females (including my own family, immediate at least) look down on this and males seem indifferent or mildly interested. What do you think of a 20-year old still building (occasionally playing if I get a mechanism) with Lego?

Your take? Your gender (so I don't need to click profiles, only if you want to) and age?

I'm a 26 year old female and I still play with lego. I have a large fortress (complete with traps, moat of sharks, and dragons) :D I think it's really cool. I also just met an INTP roughly my age who did his PhD. thesis work on lego robots that he has built!

EDIT: Oh, and this one time I staged a date with a guy (I was 23ish at the time) and we built a lego cantina togther and it was major amounts of fun.

Ya, so my 18 year old and my 24 year old sons still like legos. They like to build things that they can supply the noise, "vroom" and "ker-boom!" And then they like to destroy. Not much different than when they were 6.

Male; 20's

I would like to play with Legos if I still had some and I didn't have anything else to do. I think I would like to move up to the big leagues: Lego Mindstorm Ages: 10+. I don't see the what the problem with it is; I guess for females, it's kind of a taboo, and might be identifiable as tom-boyish, liking playing with trucks instead of dolls.

Actually, you know what, I do play with Legos. It's called "Minecraft".

Minecraft, as much as I'd like to play it, I hate being on the computer. Something about physically sharing and photographing (not screencapping) is satisfying.

I haven't read the topic, sorry. I just saw that stick out and felt the need to comment on my disdain for being on the computers (ironically).

I still play with Legos with my kids. We have tons of Legos in our house (and we will have more after Christmas). Besides just being a good way to spend time with the kids, I have used them to teach some basic physics principles like center of mass and levers.

I'd love to be on a date like that. It would sadly get me to smile a lot...

How open are they about it? Do others play with their Lego?
I never make noises when playing with Lego, guess that's just me. Nice to know there's someone older than me who still does.

Mindstorms, something I'd like to have but WAY too expensive.
As for the taboo, I'm not talking about females building/playing it, but it seems that the look down on me for doing so.

Sounds great, I tend to get along with the young kids (not my cousins) since they have an interest in this and doesn't usually require much talking, do your kids talk a lot when playing together?

To all:
What sets do you guys have, do you currently buy any? I have so many I wanted but I've 'fallen out' of Lego and now that the great sales are gone, my interest has risen up...

I'm a 18 year old male, and I love lego. I have a stash of them in my closet, and a few models around my room.

19 (in a few days) year old male, legos and people who play with legos are baller as fuck. You are a baller OP, show off your legos with pride.

My childhood collection of legos was lost to me when my parents gave them away, I was infuriated. I remember thinking it was an outrage, and the largest demonstration of disrespect I had ever experienced. I never got back into legos after that, it felt like I had too much to work up too, too much to replace. I hid in the shadows while my friends played with their legos, my mind filled with hate and jealousy. I even plotted to steal one guy's legos, came up with an incredibly elaborate plan and everything. But, in the end I decided I didn't want to replicate the suffering I had endured and scrapped the idea.

But, you have inspired me OP. You've reminded me how good it felt to play with legos, so I'm going to go out to toysrus, when the malls stop being packed with people, and buy some motherfucking legos and show them off to everyone I know.

I'm far from a baller but thanks I guess. I wouldn't say I'm inspiring you as much as reminding you.

I actually like minecraft because it's digitized. I'll admit that sharing my creations via screencap is less satisfying, but:

  • cleanup is a snap (no more searching around to find all the legos i was using)
  • multitasking is easier (since i'm already on the computer, i'm an alt+tab away from productivity)
  • scale is no longer a problem (huge creations don't require me to buy more parts)
  • space is no longer a problem (no extra physical storage needed, and tiny digital storage needed)

Other than the differences listed above (which i mostly consider positives), minecraft pretty much is lego, and for the record i do enjoy both

Male, 23.

I wish I still had legos. I used to build money storage containers but of course nothing was safe in them. I also loved building cranes. I never put much of a counter weight so of course it would not support much. I had a mix of legos and buildingblocks (copycatz!). They were always a pain to put away. Stepping on them was also never fun...

True. Another factor that you brought up in scale, is price. Which is ALWAYS a problem.

I had some odd satisfaction stepping on them. Most of the time I did though, they weren't a brick. Stepping in salt is so odd for me I don't know what I feel when I step on that, it feels very odd.

If I had unlimited free time, I would play with them.

Nearly any hobby can be endlessly fun if you dive into it, I just don't think Lego in particular has any productive value associated with it, so I pick other hobbies.

I seriously considered getting a job at the U.S. branch office of the Lego Group in Connecticut to monitor the global entertainment markets due to my respect for the company. Their offices look beautiful and it looks like a fun place to work.

LEGO MINDSTORMS!

And just regular legos. STAR WARS legos. Bought some for my nephews, considered keeping them. They're friggin' expensive now!

Legos are horrible for stepping on with bare feet, however.

Enfield, Connecticut. It's in a very remote area. There are Lego structures outside of their home office and some cornfields are across the street.

How did you get to know or share about your love of Lego?

I think I was building something at the time and chattered about it when we were talking. I am very upfront about all my nerdy hobbies because I figure the only way I'll find a decent guy is if I let them know exactly who they're planning on rolling with. As a result, I have tons of lego-loving friends.

To all:
What sets do you guys have, do you currently buy any? I have so many I wanted but I've 'fallen out' of Lego and now that the great sales are gone, my interest has risen up...

I don't buy new sets but instead stick with my retro Castle sets, my Mom (in futile attempts to turn me into a girly girl) bought me every single Paradisa set, so I have a lot of dolphins, pink bricks, my fortress is guarded by a bunch of chick in bikinis and there are palm trees surrounding the castle walls. Ah well. I also had a couple sets of.. hm, Aqua-something, the deep-sea divers. My brother collected Castle and Space sets, we tried to keep our collections a bit different so they wouldn't get too mixed up. I have a few samurai sets and a few wild west sets as well. All of my specialized sets are complemented by two huge boxes of basic lego.
