lately I saw the quality of tv-programs drop to an all time low, especially in the sci-fi genre.
My question is if there are tv-series that you think are good currently or in the past.

Please mention the name and what the general idea/plot is.

I have a hard time finding good tv series too. In the past I enjoyed HBO's Rome and Starz Spartacus. I got over Lost by like 5th season and got a few seasons into 24 before it lost my interest.

As far as current series

The Walking Dead on AMC is awesome

Dexter is one of my favorite series of all-time

Terra Nova is entertaining

Spartacus is supposed to be getting another season starting in 2012

I never really got into House or Scrubs but I enjoy It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I think that's one of the funniest shows.

I also liked Archer on FX but the second season wasn't half as good as the first.

That's a good show for many reasons but I'm not going to say why because that will spoil it completely for it.

The problem that I have with the 'fictional' shows on TV today are that they just don't carry a level of realism that transcends over to real life. I know that I am watching something that is purely fictional (or based on a non-fictional event) but it just lacks the realism that I like for a show to have so that I can make associations to real life events. I'm suffering from the same problem as the OP but it's in a different way. A person might say to watch a documentary or those shows where they profile real life people but I know that the producers fabricate those shows to appeal more to our stereotypes. There just is a lack of realism that I'm getting from these TV shows today. It might have always been that way for some people but I'm really just starting to be able to identify it over the past year.

If you want a fiction show with some "realism" in it you should check out the Stargate series, at least they look a little after science in their series. Unfortunately I saw them twice already.

6 feet under seems quite good because of the weird humor, I'll probably watch it.

Terra Nova, Dexter, Thundercats (modern), House, and probably X-Men (anime), though I haven't been following the latter.

Old shows that are good include e.g. The Outer Limits (In colour) and The Shield.

tell me how you like 6 feet under. it is amazing and addictive, and some of the best TV i have ever watched. each episode is like a little movie. the shots were interesting, and the characters as well, as they evolve. the acting superb. the creator worked on "american beauty" and he does see both darkness and comedy in life all around him. i learned a lot about undertakers from this show.

I haven't watch't it yet but out of the trailer I could make out some 'dark humor' which I like, the characters also seem to be filled with humor and darkness at the same time, can't really describe it.

QI. It's a UK quiz show about interesting things and commonly held misconceptions.
It's funny and there's always something that is quite interesting in every episode.

Deadwood.

It's a very realistic western (almost more of a historical drama than a western) that revolves around the South Dakota mining camp of deadwood and it's lawless ways and the people who hold power in the town. It's the most profound and best show I have ever seen. It has a looooot of swearing though but with the old-timey way the characters speaks it almost comes off Shakespearean.

Terra Nova
Earth is overpopulated & almost drained of resources. Gateway to the past is built. People are selected to go. They go & try to establish a new civilization. Threats from the future may be coming.

Dexter
Serial killer working for the police dept.

The Walking Dead
Zombie apocalypse. Based on a very popular graphic novel.

Hell on Wheels
A realistic westerm which is a heck of a lot more than anyone would expect in that genre.

Deadwood
An excellent Western. A must see!

Twin Peaks (it is not for everyone, but Agent Dale Cooper is my personal hero, He is my most admired fictional character in any context)

Dexter

Futurama (The original Four and half seasons)

Anything that is shown on HBO and Showtime would be a good bet.

yes, with Universe they just stopped in the middle of the story. It was just getting interesting and then they drop the series, fantastic timing :D

I like:
Misfits (uk) this is a awesome show just finished up the third season. I liked it from the first ten minutes. Misfits is a British science fiction comedy-drama television series about a group of young offenders forced to work in a community service programme, where they obtain supernatural powers after a strange electrical storm.
Love dexter and hell on wheels as well

Being Erica - although the main character is very non-NT. Good show about self-growth.

I linked them. You can do your own research. The last one I linked to hulu where you can watch the show.

I unrecommend "The Walking Dead". The main character is a pansy and they spend the better part of the show futzing around with their feelings. I'm not so desperate for zombies that I have to watch some emo-apocalypse show. I'll just go to the mall if I want to see brainless automatons and people run on emotions.

South Park pretty much summarized this show correctly by calling it Lost with Dinosaurs.
