I'm curious about shadow types in general. Couple of initial questions:
How does your shadow type express itself? (I mean in you specifically, not in theory.) Do you know of any good links to read up on shadow types? The ones I've read are vague. |

I've not seen my shadow type manifest, as far as I can tell when I am under stress or sick the negative INTJ traits show up more instead. Specifically I get arrogant, socially anxious, intolerant, and withdraw even more inside myself.
I have seen a Jekyll/Hyde type shadow personality come out with a friend of mine though. He is ESTJ and when he is stressed he really does exhibit all the negative traits of his 'shadow' type instead of the negative ones of his own. He read about shadow types and pointed it out to me, so it wasn't just visible to others, he could see it himself. He knew he was acting and feeling different from his usual self but could make no sense of it. His change in behavior was like a switch was suddenly thrown and poof he was completely different, walls went up that I couldn't get through. Finding out about shadow types was a light bulb moment for him, up until then he was at a complete loss to understand what was going on. |

Speeding with little regard for rules, going out on the town to drink with intent to get drunk and nothing else, uncontrollable emotions, just getting up and going to do something without plans, etc.
It's actually manageable and a growth process when you see/live with an ESxP and learn the positive aspects. For me, the negatives are when it's basically a form of escapism. Drinking, movie watching (though it can be TV or video game playing as well), over eating, over excersicing. Getting hung up on details. I've done all of those. 6 or 7 weeks of 60 hour weeks and trying to push a project uphill will do that. I think it's more of an issue of not perceiving a conclusion to the project, which leads to frusutration, depression, and eventually the shadow. Another, good topic to look into is the anima/animus. Getting acquainted with this topic helps turn the negative aspects into positive ones. I think INTJs are a little more in tune with that topic (subconsciously) due to the Ni. |

Smacknrat's shadow behaviour is more consistent with the MBTI CP arrangement. My behaviour follows the model to some extent. When stressed out, I interpret others' remarks with bizarre (and absurd) way especially when it sounds like criticism. I find myself saying "screw everything" and binge-drinking (I drank alcohol when I was really stressed out), without thinking about my future dreams/goals/ideals, however you put it. I get caught up by details and I refuse to proceed until the details are under control. In extreme stress, negative past experiences come up to me like impulses (It's torturing to me).

when i'm stressed out about my relationship with people, i usually shut myself in and take a step back from the relationship to see where it's going, maybe get some opinions from the very few people i trust, because i am very bad at people-thing in general.
when i'm stressed out about work, i literally just shut myself in, and try to figure it out myself. when i'm VERY VERY stressed out, I eat a lot of junk food, I'll exercise like half the day, I'll sleep like 24 hours, and I just won't care about the "future outcomes" of such behaviors. I'll get easily offended and just lash out at anyone and everyone, I get very insecure about my personal image, and i start caring about superficial, frivolous things like fashion, and i start spending money and go shopping (although i know I shouldn't). I'll cry, and that's when I know there's something wrong with me. i can't make a decision to save my life (dannon vs. yoplait...), spend hours doing absolutely nothing productive, and then wonder why my life sucks. I've read somewhere around here, that INTJ's act more like ESTP when they're extremely stressed out... my belief is that to others, we may act like ESTP, but to ourselves, we can see that we're acting like a stressed out ESFP when we're on a verge of a breakdown, we just don't show it as well because feeling is our tertiary behavior (I think???). I think at first, you become more of an INTJ, then once you reach the extreme, you go toward the other end ESFP (which is probably in the worst case scenario). I can see that at first, I'll be more of an INTJ, but then, if the stress factor does not get solved in some manner, I start becoming overly detailed (most likely because i'm still stressed and troubled, so i start looking at details), and so on. |
