@JulietCapulet: Yes, but what if banality and unpleasantness make up the majority of life, with only short blips of true happiness here and there? Sure, I'd appreciate those happy moments but life would always feel lacking if this is the case.

I feel like OP a lot, but not so much this year. Anyway, I couldn't wake up even though I had 4-5 hard/interesting classes that day, I stayed in my room for 3 days straight, and generally hated University. I've not completely gotten past this, but my advice is to really take a look at what you're learning and see if you like/believe in it. For example, I was in Army ROTC here at school, but once I got out of it I felt like my own person and did much better than usual. So, if your major or something else is just a monkey on your back, take the initiative and abandon it. Do what you like, not what you think is 'best'.
