I feel like my friends take great pride in their movie knowledge and knowing a celebrity's name. And I get questioned, "Oh you don't know who Jason Statham is?" "You haven't watched 'My Sister's Keeper'"?

And yes, I like movies and television like everyone else does but I don't want to sit around waiting for the new episode of Burn Notice to come on. (Did I use hubris properly? :P) I just don't find it important to know - I actually wished I watched less TV. But my friends are all obsessed with it and all compete in their who watched more TV shows / whose seen more movies.

Is anyone else going through this nonsense I'm going through having friends like this? And also - what is wrong with them (I just don't find it important and can't understand why they do)?

(Whatever pFF, this is what im talking about)

Actually I'm pretty good at this kind of knowledge. It is the only knowledge I can pick up instantly without really studying it and I don't even watch these shows. I pick up all this stuff through commercials. People around me do talk about these shows and movies in that manner. I might join in but I have a better taste in shows.

This is why i don't do pub quizzes or watch tv quiz shows. The funniest thing is when people that are good at these claim they're more intelligent than those who're not. What tv passes off as knowledge and intelligence is more often than not, chimps getting fat absorbing mindless celebrity bollocks like shit paper.

I have some popular Japanese anime voice actor knowledge. Does that make me a nerd, or one of these annoying people as well?

Burn Notice is a good show about an ex-agent, who dresses very well.
My Sister's Keeper is a movie against cloning.
Jason Statham is the skinner Bruce Willis. He stars in the Transporter series, Crank 1 and 2, Death Race, and etc.

I'm on top of these subjects, yet they are still useless to me in a conversation. If you're uninterested and don't want to watch, just Google the summaries.

I don't even watch T.V anymore,

All I know is if I hear someone mention "The Jersey Shore" around me again, I will most likely stab them in the neck.

Pretty sure.

I don't know what you're talking about, "The Jersey Shore" is a great, well thought out documentary about the realistic problems our generation is facing today. It tries to criticize our current spendthrift way of life better than any documentary Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock has ever made.

Also Snooks blew Sitch.

It was actually an interpretation on how our egalitarian way of life is being manipulated and crippled by the parsimonious class known as the elites.

I actually watched (not at the moment, but I'll probably start again) quite a lot of tv shows, and a lot of them I started watching because a friend recommended it. I don't own a tv and I don't plan to, but the internet is plenty enough. (Watching them in tv would mean watching them in french, on top of all other disagreements, and I hate it.)

However I watch them because I want to and because I like it. I have absolutely no "popular culture" in a lot of other areas (sports, music, movies - as opposite to series, celebrities...). And yes, my friends take great pleasure in mocking me about it. But the only thing that bothers me is not knowing enough in the areas that actually interest me (literature for instance). I don't think I'll ever find the will nor the time to "improve" in the areas they mock me about.

Oh dear, I'm afraid you're peering through that infamous Foucaultian lens within the framework of post-structuralist enthalpy. Child please! as my mother would say.

I used to be like this, but since then I learned around 30% of the famous actors names and have watched most of the movies that are considered "good" and famous.
Just find more intuitives and you wont have that problem.

I don't see what you are trying to claim? That t.v is evil?

People have different tastes. Everybody is a geek at something. I'm sure everyone in this thread has a hobby or something that they know a lot about. A hobby that when you really think about it, is kind of useless.

I know a lot about Norse mythology and mythological constructs in general. I find it fun to learn about. When is it actually going to be useful or really of any discernible worth? Probably never.

I'm not saying that t.v shows like Jersey Shore are good or are worth watching but I don't think the people who watch them expect to really learn anything just like how I know I won't learn a whole lot of in the hours I spend playing videogames, watching foreign art-house films, and reading the 800 page Complete Chronicles of Conan.

Everybody has activities they do that they enjoy that are kind of a waste of time in the sense that not a whole lot of value is learned or gained. That's pretty much the very reason they are seen as fun.

There is nothing wrong with your friends besides the fact that they have different interests than you.

Well I know more about movies and actors names than the average. But this is true for a lot of different things like sciences, logic, computers, photography, art, business, law, travel, literature, music, cooking, name it.

I never overwhelm others with my knowledge unless someone asks directly and I have no other option. My in laws have no idea I am not a dimwit. hehehe

Well, that for a little undercover action.

I guess people react badly when you act like a bookworm. It is in bad taste, so I understand why you don't like your friends talking about cinema if are not interested.

Plus, it is true that an overwhelming amount of the movies/series we have are dumb and worthless. And people love that. So why bother? It *is* a waste of time. Just change the conversation, getting new friends is more difficult and we must learn to accept others as different from us.

I'm also fond of watching movies, but I normally focus on the thematic content rather than plot/production details. In terms of aesthetic value, few movies are worth talking about anyway so as much as possible, I don't talk about movies with anyone who won't be able to relate or much less appreciate them.
