Are the audience faking it? What is your opinion about hypnosis?

When I last saw a hypnotist on stage, he asked any audience member who wanted to come on stage and be hypnotized. Those who were willing (or perhaps believed in hypnosis), were open to his hypnotic suggestions. The audience members, who weren't so thrilled going up had a difficult time going into a hypnotic state.

I guess it could be done, if the participant wanted to be hypnotized.

I don't know about stage hypnosis, but I have received hypnotherapy to help with a disorder and I felt that it worked somewhat. If one's mind is open to suggestion, then why shouldn't one receive it?

Hypnosis is an amazing thing. A friend of my dad uses it as an anesthetic at the dentist. Many people use it for child birth pains. Also to remember things. Only works if you want it to though.

Usually, the person has to be agreeable towards hypnosis for it to work. Also, in a crowd, it becomes a "crowd mentality" one person sees everyone else doing something and follows suit. Most of them don't want to stick out by not fitting in.

I, for instance, am not susceptible to hypnosis because, my mind is not open to it and I don't feel the need nor the reason for it.

I certainly wouldn't ever volunteer to be hypnotized, especially on TV. I don't even drink alcohol because I'm that bent on staying in absolute control of myself.

who could trust that a hypnotist isn't going to slip a suggestion to you that will make you do something completely ridiculous or against your morals or... NO! no!

Hypnosis is a powerful tool, not sure about long term suggestion, but it definitely works in the short-term.

I recommend learning basic self-hypnosis techniques and mechanisms to anyone, it will teach you a lot about your subconscious and your capacity to influence it for your own good.

I have to totally agree with that! The shown stage-hypnosis is a different story due to too many different things going on in parallel. But professional hypnosis can be very powerful even with the lack of scientific explanation why that is!

Unfortunately or fortunately some of us have an unconscious watchdog that jumps into action when hypnosis starts to go too deep.
CrudeHypothesis stated that he would like to stay in control of himself and therefore avoids hypnosis. During my NLP education my teacher for hypnosis told me right after a few minutes of observing me that I'm not very suggestible why hypnotizing me would be most likely futile. And she was right!
During every hypnotically attempt my inner watch-dog always interfered right when the trance state started to go too deep or when subtle suggestions have been presented.

Also during a core transformation process session my watchdog jumped in to make sure that those people around me will not see anything of my inner self and let the situation become "uncontrollable" for me (whatever "uncontrollable" might mean).

I have the presumption that many of us INTJs have similar kinds of watch-dogs as part of the INTJ personality why many language patterns, social rituals and tricks do not work on us as they do on other people (many on this forum like to call this "their bullshit detector").
This might be (to my current state of thinking about this matter) why we INTJs are seen by other people to behave odd and why especially ENFPs are so intrigued by us.

I believe in hypnosis. I wonder if anyone here is familiar with the conversational hypnosis techniques of

Scary stuff. Can be used on people without their consent, apparently.

If we INTJs are more hypnosis resistant, perhaps that has to do with our primary Introverted Intuition, making us a bit more comfortable and familiar with our unconscious?

Or perhaps it's an INT-thing? Might one suppose INTP's are just as resistant, INFJ's less so? Any comments from any INTPs or INFJs out there? What's your experience with hypnosis?
