Lately, I've been trying to get into slow, beat-less ambient music but it's hard to find beat-less tracks (they often have beats even when the artist or someone else claims that they have no beats which confuses me, are people defining 'beat' differently?). I know there are different sub-genres of ambient music, is ambient drone music necessarily beat-less?

Can you give some examples of beatless ambient music, out of curiosity?

Beatless music sounds like it might belong in the experimental section. Most "good" music has beats because beats define the song and give it rhythm.

The only artist coming to mind right now is Ulrich Schnauss.... but he uses beats...

What do you mean by "beat-less"? Obviously doof-doof dance rubbish isn't your style, but all the music I own has an inherent rhythm to it.

Could you link to an example of thise "beat-less" ambient music?

Unless I'm mistaken and these do have beats that I can't hear.

I'm mostly into Robert Rich and Steve Roach when it comes to pure, beatless ambient, but then I haven't really looked for it that hard. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

is probably my all time favorite ambient track. That's the exact feeling I get when reading science fiction.

I quite like most of these tracks. They bring to mind an album by Benn Jordan titled Pale Blue Dot which is not entirely beatless but fairly minimal on them.

The game Osmos has some really good ambient music, but I couldn't tell you who made it.

Can't think of any offhand, but I know I've got some good beatless ambient in my collection. I listen to that sort of music at work when I need to concentrate. I'll have to dig around and see what I can find.

I've been a big fan of Eluvium ever since I saw him do this song live:

- it's a long one, so that's only part one.

I've also done a couple of beatless ambient albums under an old project of mine - one is based on the Super Metroid soundtrack, and the other was from an hour-long keyboard session with a friend of mine that I remixed into actual songs.

There are samples of both up at the pages.

I've been doing drum and bass songs lately, but they certainly have some ambient elements to them (like when the beat drops out). I may do some more ambient tunes in the future - I've been told I have a knack for it.

Actually, you listened to another piece by Mr. Roach entitled 'Dream Body' but you should check that one out as well.

Here's one with no beat...at all. In my mind it's more like someone trying to tune in on god on a radio. It does require some patience, but it's worth it.

Gonna bump this with some more ambience :D
Huge fan of the genre, myself. Especially the stuff with no solid rhythmic background or "beat less" as you put it :P

Benn Jordan's Pale Blue Dot album.

One of my favorites, wonderful to fall asleep to.

Jonn Serrie's Planetary Chronicles. There are a few volumes, I have vol. 1 and 2. Both are wonderful. And The Stars Go With You is great as well, just about anything Jonn Serrie composes with an astronomical concept is worth checking out.
