Last night just before falling asleep I came up with this hypothesis out of nowhere:

What if the 4 MBTI major type groups evolutionary developed as means of handling the reality of primitive humans beginning to use more tools and building a society with them? With "tools", what I had in mind was either work tools, technology, or actual human beings as tools to improve a group/society/civilization.

SP - Maximize present use of tools (including humans) in terms of skills of usage and manipulation of them or with them.

SJ - Proficiently manage the tools available (humans included) for maintaining order, as reflected in past order they wish to preserve - either from their own experiences of the past (family history, corporate history, etc), or a made up version (bible stories) when gaps needs to be filled in to set an example.

NF - Use humans as tools, focusing on creating what they perceive as a better future with these "tools".

NT - Constructing a strategic scheme for using tools (including humans) in a goal-oriented fashion (independent of time).

Specifically with the SPs and SJs, one could easily see how these two groups (which Kersey says make up about 85% of the population together) complete each-other. The SP is an expert in using the tools which the SJ knows how to manage. I couldn't quite make up the connection between the NFs and NTs from the same "tool-based" approach though. Myself an INTJ, I have an ENFP girlfriend who completes me in all sorts of ways, but still I couldn't connect the dots here with my own hypothesis.

What do you think of all this?

So, in theory, no society is complete without all the types.

Yes, it makes perfect evolutionary sense! We humans socially exile those who we don't like. Kersey argues that about 85% are either SJ or SP, while only 15% are NF and NT. This is very much visible in how much these types are liked and worshiped in popular culture - SJ and SP types are "prom queens" or "pillars of their community", NF are "dreamy idealists" or "hippies" (curse words for many) and the NTs might be appreciated for their work/achievements sometimes, but are pushed aside for their "social awkwardness". Still, human evolution could not rid itself of the NFs and NTs because their roles in society are vital for the survival of the human race. No NFs - no Woodstock/Peace Movement/Much of the 60s-70s Music/Teachers who shapes lives through ideals/Carl Yung (and MBTI, lol), etc. No NTs - no modern science... or any science for that matter ^_^
