I have noticed there's certain traits in common with most high post count members.

It's like war vets. There's the forum equivalent of a 1000 yard stare. I try to agitate them, try to get a rise out of them. But they're dead inside. They've seen too much.

It's a cruel fate, really.

Nope. I have seen too many join and have a post count of 5000 in the first month. They treat the forum as a chat forum and all their posts are one liner spams as they engage in small talk with their new online buddies.

I get to recognise a few names because they tend to post in subjects of mutual interest and because they seem to have something to say. I am not too worried if they take opposite positions, just so long as they make interesting points. If they have nothing to say, I would rather they didn't post at all.

Post count is meaningless to me. So are most self promoted, self centered resumes of "experience" attempting to add validity to a person's opinions...about as worthless as an unsubstantiated statistic.

I take a certain perverse pleasure in having a relatively high post count, I won't deny, but I don't expect anyone to take my opinion more seriously in, say, a political debate because of it. The idea is kind of silly, I think.

A user's post count used to affect my impression of them. But then mine started getting high and people started commenting on how they liked my posts and I was like really? Most of the time I'm just making up shit as I go along. So now nothing really affects me now but getting a sense of the persons personality through reading a bunch of their posts.

Yeah, if nothing else, this forum makes you take a hard look at yourself.

Explain. This theory is fascinating because I never saw us like that (being in "that crowd").

Positing from what you are saying, people like me are simply accustomed to what happens here. We do not, for example, get flamed because we are too stoic to accept that we are being insulted.

Post whore? Please explain ...

I probably have a high post count. Yup, I do! That's because of the word games. I do not participate much in the other discussions because well ... I have my reasons.

Does this make me a "post whore"?

I don't think people post on game threads because they want to "build up an impressive word count". I think they do because they'd like to have fun and/or are bored and/or are killing time. I wish I could participate on the game threads more, but I'm not all that witty and clever.

No, that doesn't. There's no harm in playing games. What's so wrong about having some fun?

I don't really post in the game forums.. though "Insult the last poster" was a good one.

IMO there's more to it than that - you triple-digit types are treated with more deference by us low double-digit types. We might get some slack with each other, but expect none as to you guys.

Does putting-up a 5-digit post-count while allegedly working on your PhD say anything not so complimentary about the poster?

hehe, yes, agreed. also, um, i'm a fan of the game threads... a bigger inbox would be nice. workin' on getting to be 100% member, then i will feel like i've achieved something.

Hell, i get most of mine through the game threads anyway.. which isn't a "bad thing" or a "good thing"... It just keeps me entertained while i'm doing school work or other related things on the computer.

Triple digit what? If you're talking about number of posts, you have 300-something, which is 3 digits. If you're talking about the percentage above your avatar, you have 7%, which is single digits (putting a 0 doesn't count). So what are you talking about?

The percentage is displayed with a 0 in front, so that's probably what he means.

No, but it happens quite often that I'll see a name I absolutely don't recognize (venuswho?), then notice that they have thousands of posts. Baffled me, until realized there are discussion posters and there are community posters

Can I have the BEST of both worlds, please?

Some of the discussion threads here are full of shit. Life in itself is full of shit. I'll have wit and humor, please. There's also Ni and Te in the game threads.
