I do this all the time, I'm thinking about tons of small things that are stimulating and then I'll realize that I want or need to go somewhere to act on the idea. I get to the part of the house I need to be in to enact the idea, but by then I've already thought the idea through one of its logical conclusions. In fact, I've already "completed" the original thought in my head and have moved on to a different, but equally stimulating idea. Then I'm just left standing in the room like an idiot trying to remember why I was there in the first place. It's really annoying, and I've lost a lot of good ideas over the years doing this.
Anyone else do this a lot? |

Classic ADD symptom, which tends to be common among us introverted rationals, myself included.

I don't, but my wife does. She will go to the store for one thing and come home with 100 things, none of which are the for which she went, then have to go back for that.

Happens to me all the time. I've tried numerous things over the years to try and remember things.
Tying a piece of string around your finger? doesn't work, you just end up with a red finger and no idea why you tied string around it. Writing a note in my phone isn't bad, but in the space of time of me thinking of something and me getting out my phone to write myself a note...i forget, and end up playing angry birds instead. the only way I remember things I have to do is to write then in pen on the back of my hand. if i run out of space i just move onto my arm. i just can't shower or the ink comes off :S |

Sometimes. When I'm out and about I've often forget to do what I originally intended.

I have random space outs. The worst ever was a couple of months ago when I had about 4 hours sleep and was extremely focused on what I was doing--which was making sales visits to prospective customers.
I completely forgot I parked my car in the driveway of a restaurant and went back to look for my car up the street--where I had parked earlier. When I didn't see my car I went into tailspin thinking it was stolen or towed. I even got the mechanic shop nearby involved. They were about to call the police. Then one of them, on a hunch, called the restaurant where I parked my car--and sure enough...it was right there. I STILL have no recollection of parking there. Eerie! |

Very often. At first I attributed it to my increasingly aging mind (I'm 35). But the more it happens (and it happens quite frequently) I've pretty much come to the conclusion that it's my thought process going a million miles per hour.
Once I even begin the act doing something I'm already planning my next move and the move after that. |

All the time. My memory isn't really good. I easily forget things so the only way to remember them is to repeat them mentally until I get to write them down.
It's like I go in a room to get or do something, as you said, and stand there like an idiot for a minute or two until it returns to my mind. Sometimes, I fail to remember so I just give up. :/ Other times I put something somewhere and minutes later I just can't find it. It's like the whole process was done mechanically. These thoughts are trying to intrude my mind the whole time. Sometimes, it feels like a barrage and is totally unbearable. I just want to relax. But other times I really love it as it keeps me occupied and is very fun. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

The trip to do something usually gets me distracted with either my thoughts or something curious that happen along the way. So happens to me often, then I'm irritated with myself for a good time after for getting distracted as such.

Indeed. I have ADHD, and I have the condition the OP describes chronically. |

I get that often,it`s like somebody brushed off the content of my mind,it`s an extremely unpleasant sensation.
Memory it`s part of our identity so when there is a glitch, I feel like I`m underwater with my hands and feet tied trying to get to the surface.Just a very loose analogy to try to convey the feeling. |

The only time I forget why I did something, is when I make a decisions based on impulsive behavior.

This happens to me sometimes, usually because I'm daydreaming instead of thinking about what I'm doing.

Rarely, because it's rare for there to be a purpose to forget.

Happens to me all the time. Vibrant imaginations and certain focus are causes.

It feels like a constant battle to keep my train of thought these days. Is it age (approaching 50)? Lack of sleep (yes)? Technology (endless little distractions)? Long-ago pot smoking (yup)? A certain blandness to my busy everyday life (sigh)? I don't know, but it's worrisome. I can usually recover a thought by replaying my experiences over the last several minutes. Direct attempts to remember seem oddly to chase the memory away (never used to). Alzheimers here I come.

I've noticed the same symptoms on me becoming more and more frequent (I'm 25 years old). I suspect it has something to do with my unhealthy lifestyle and irregular hours of sleep.

I have a terrible memory all the time. I've tried making lists, but I forget about them later. It's not selective either. I forget about stuff that's important to me as well as work obligations. I really need to check into something to help this.

Not often. Occasionally, yes. It always happens when I lose myself in some random thoughts. Sometimes I don't forget where I'm going, I just forget to make a turn and I end up in a different place. That only happened 2 times though, and it wasn't a big deal so it's not serious.

One word.. piracetam. Hasn't happened since. Granted, I only discovered it a week ago.. I really have to say that it also helps my express myself; something to do with strengthening the bond between Ni and Te, I presume (via the Corpus Callosum). Placebo? I don't think so.

I've had this happen a few times; I remember being so caught up in thought, my driving was on autopilot, I forgot that I was not going home |
