Are there any Diablo fans around? If you are a Diablo fan you are probably thrilled that Diablo 3 is finally truly in the making. Is anyone as excited as i am?

I recently started writing a story that's been developing in my head for a few years with a Diablo-ish setting . . . although it does things a lot differently than a computer game would, I actually think the setting & the way the world works would make for a compelling Diablo-esque game design.

So, I'm happy as a gamer even though it'll be a while before anyone gets to play it. As an artist, I'm cautious, which hasn't really happened to do with gaming in this way before.

I was pretty big on D2 and the expansion. But it seems that WOW stole the bulk of the clientele from the Diablo series over the years. When D3 comes out, and hopefully much later than SCII, it may be conflicting with WoW unless Blizzard continues to make online bnet play free. From what I gathered (based on randomized map generations hence games are created separately), the game will still follow the Diablo style of play rather than MMORPG which is good.

On a side note: the game-play video was nice and they only disclosed 2/5 of the playable classes. Good graphics but you probably need a decent rig to get decent frame rates due to the physics engine. I'm predicting beta testing around march-may 2009, and the SCII beta announcement this November.

Pretty neat although I have to admit I probably would've been happier to hear this about 5 years ago. DII has been out for so long that I stopped playing it years ago and had pretty much forgotten about it until I saw this post.

I never got into WOW, i've been playing Diablo 2 and the expansion for the past 8 years, and i definitely prefer it over WOW, i'm not a big fan of MMORPGs, and i'm hoping you are right, and that they won't turn it into one.

D2 has been out for a long time, but every time i go back and play the game it is highly enjoyable, but i have been yearning for more, and am very excited that i have something to look forward to now.

I played diablo, hellfire, diablo 2 and all of the other blizzard games. I'd be thrilled for a diablo 3, but don't forget there's still starcraft 2 that needs to be released. Not to mention, blizzard typically takes several years to complete their games.

My wife and I are both eagerly awaiting it. I played it from the release of D2 until a good while after 1.10 patch in D2:LOD (dunno how many years that is). She played it for about 2 (before we ever met each other). I was a pvp nut. Manipulate the trade market to get the items I need, then go pvp all day. Decide I want a new build, trade some more to get the items I need, build it. Etc... The gameplay video brought a tear to my eye. I want to play NOW!

Though I'm not a Diablo 'fan', I did enjoy the games and I'm happy to see another sequel. I'm more excited for SC2 though..*hides from incoming tomatoes*

The rumoured release date for D3 will be christmas 2009, so you don't have to worry about it conflicting with SC2's or WOTLK. (SC2 is supposed to release on 3 december 2008* and WOTLK somewhere in Fall*).

*According to shops.

Offtopic: Spore is set for 4 September and Warhammer Online for 23 September, so we have plenty to do before D3 is here.

Im totally psyched about it as diablo 2 has been the most addicting game that blizzard has mad yet but im rather glad starcraft 2 is gonna be coming out before it as I must get both and if they both were released at the same time i would totally fail school. Blizzards games are probably more addicting than cigarettes.

The game play video really was amazing. I watched it several times. I'm really excited that it is 3d.

According to Blizzard folks this weekend at that event, SC2 will not be out this Christmas.

I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't actually see D3 until 2010. Unless they fiddled with the loot drops, that gameplay video they showed is probably the very first big dungeon in the game (which I think is Tristam Cathedral, the location of Diablo I). So development is still very early. I love the new witch doctor, though, as I love pet-based classes (played druid in D2 and warlock in WoW). And who doesn't love a guy who can summon a wall of zombies? The environmental interactivity is neat too.

I ended up reinstalling D2 yesterday in a fit of nostalgia and am now building up a necromancer, one of the classes I didn't play much at all, as I found him too difficult at the time.

Interestingly, I bought "Titan Quest" last year, a diabloesque game with an ancient Greek/Asian theme to it and customizable classes. Even though the graphics were lovely and the character development system was awesome, I really couldn't get into it as much as I got into Diablo. There was just some sort of spark missing that I couldn't define.

I agree. I got into Titan Quest a while ago but it just doesn't compare with the sheer vastness of D2 Loot and its hellish storyline. There's something about gothic, hellspawn, and prime evils that beat Greek mythology. Titan question was also pretty rigged as some classes and some farmed items made the game too easy. D2 Hell difficulty on Bnet after the 1.1 patch was maddening as even decent items didn't suffice for soloing the later acts.

Anyone else disappointed with D III?

I'm happy it's coming out, but seriously nearly nothing is new.

1. It's in 3D. Ground-breaking.
2. Slightly more customization. That's a hook.\
3. New story line.
4. Health globes.
5. Cleaner UI.

what more do you want from it?

I don't want anything to be too new. I still want it to seem like Diablo.

Very few games these days are "groundbreaking". The general consensus for video game releases today tend to build on older successful models. D3 will probably be like D2 in many aspects of style/art as that will retain its fan-base. The differences will be in the game play which is what Blizzard prides itself in with every one of their releases. I'm also looking forwards to how the story progresses.

Not to mention that they haven't released all that much about the game yet. Plus Blizzard's tendency is to innovate with the first game and then refine and expand with its sequels.

Given that they're already showing off a map of the world on the site, I wouldn't be surprised if they made the progress of this game a little more free-form, allowing more exploration.

Oh snap. I remember reading a rumor somewhere years ago, but I think that may have just been made up by someone. It said something about the plot involving a battle between heaven and hell or something. But this is very exciting! I just hope my computer is able to run it.

manger added to this post, 26 minutes and 28 seconds later...

OH GOD. I just watched the gameplay video, grinning the entire time. My childhood! With better graphics!

I disliked Diablo II...it's so repetitive: run around, kill, loot, run around some more, kill a stronger guy and get better loot etc. and the story wasn't compelling at all IMO.

They're smart enough to realize that fans of the old game don't want to play something completely different. All those things you mentioned are a dream come true for real Diablo fans (though I'm sure some would have even preferred a more refined 2D style but that's being curmudgeonly).

As the saying goes: if it's not broke, don't fix it.

That pretty much sums it up. I never really got into D2 because Baldurs Gate II came out the same year, or at least around the same time that I got D2. Now that was an AMAZING GAME! In fact, I'd say it was my favorite computer game of all time.

no one plays single player diablo...

The main fun though is trying different classes and different builds. Then gearing them. Trying unique new things and pvping with it. I was one of only 2 people on US-West NL pvping with a enchant sorc using the bow that gives guided arrow (right after 1.10). The fun for me was trying to be competative in PVP with odd builds.
