With the release of

we are now into even doing re-makes of sequels of old movies, which lead me to wonder what old movies (particularly science fiction) should be remade.

I always liked the concept behind

Another was a "monday night movie" for ABC called

which also suffers from horribly outdated costumes (and a paucity of visual effects) by today's standards.

Another one that was worth being remade, apparently already has been remade: (another monday night movie called)

Nitpicking, but wasn't Rise a prequel with an alternate story arc? I definitely enjoyed it, but that was the impression that I got. That's what Batman Begins did (...wasn't it?), definitely an opportunity for pop film considering it feels like everything else has been done already.

Certainly - but it is also an alternative remake of two prequel to the original planet of the Apes series, Escape from the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, both regarding the progenitor of the ape civilization, the first "inelligent" chimpanzee, Ceasar.

The point is, we're rehashing film material over and over.

I wish I could remember the exact quote, but the "end of the year" issue of L.A. Weekly for 1984 talked about how it was a "nothing year," and summed it up using an anecdote about how a director seeking a production money for a movie (can't remember which) had to content with reticence from potential backers complaining, "well no one has ever made a movie like this before," to which he replied, "you mean we're in danger of doing something original?"

Seems like deja vu, all over again.

I'd like a remake of Back to the Future for the present time going back 30 years. 2015 would be the perfect year to do it...going back to 1985. =-D

Police Story - starring Tony Jah
Phantom of the Opera - Starring Zack Galifinakis
Star Wars - starring Shia LeBeouf. Hahaha.
Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail - Starring Larry the Cable Guy and Dane Cook.

I think that before they make a new Transformers sequel, they should remake the first movie. It's been a couple of years already, there are much better CGI explosions possible now.

You means remakes of the originals or remakes of the remakes?

Citizen Kane, though I doubt if any modern rendition can match the critical acclaim.

One science fiction classic that I'm surprised still hasn't been made into a movie is Larry Niven's Ringworld series. (as such, I know it's not a remake - but why does hollywood keep going over and over the same material. Seriously.. how many "final destinations" do we really need?)

I suspect I might hang myself if ever this were to happen. If ever there were a sign of the apocalypse...

I'd love to see how badly Hollywood could bastardize the Warriors!

Other than that, the old James Bond flicks seem like an absolute goldmine of remake potential. Especially if re-imagined by the likes of Christopher Nolan...

Which is why as far as I'm concerned film has been all but dead as a medium since the mid-late 90's (and that might just be sentimental bias on my part, having been raised and grown up mostly in that decade). Since the millennium virtually nothing has ever come out that I've really cared to see, with maybe four or five exceptions (I liked The Dark Knight, I proudly admit, and There Will Be Blood was a masterpiece; Inception had its issues but at least toyed with the mind enough to be interesting). It's really hard renting movies with siblings. They look at new releases and nothing else, I completely ignore new releases and prefer classics. I'll sit through their boring, predictable ADHD-stimulation tripe, but they'll flat-out refuse to watch anything with me if it's black-and-white without even knowing what it's about.

It's so bad that we're ALREADY rebooting the Spiderman and Batman franchises.

At least try some art house cinemas. A lot of good stuff comes by. One gem I thoroughly enjoyed last year was Des Hommes et Des Dieux, just to name one example.

The Death Wish series. Since they want to bastardize old films by remaking them they should stick with good stuff.

I was very disappointed in "Urban Legends". I remember seeing that in the late 90's. It's such an interesting, compelling idea. But they TOTALLY crapped out and made it ultra-cheeseball, with pathetic script, direction, acting, production values, etc. I could go on about how sucking it was. If only some competent filmmakers would take that idea on and do something excellent with it.........

Flash Gordon would be interesting. My original experience with that one was the Queen version.

I can barely stand the movies coming out, particularly the remakes. You'd think nothing new is written, but I think it's just less risky to remake a proven story. How many more superhero movies can be made and remade, seriously?

It seems we're looking for good stories where previous productions might be too dated for modern audiences to relate with. Hmm... I wouldn't mind seeing someone try to remake one of the Hitchcock films- Rope, NxNW or Vertigo. Maybe cast Tom Hanks as the lead.
