This is a continuation of a previous thread, but on a different environment. That said, if you were to be dropped in the desert, what would you consider necessary to survive? Again, you can only choose up to 12 items.
For me, I will say the following. - 2 Burkas (one white, one sand color) to protect my body from the sun yet not attrack to much heat. Skin cancer is too high so although it will be hot, this color should still be a bit more refreshing and protective. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. - posted on my previous threat, I would find this tool pretty handy This chinese military multi-functional shovel: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. - A thick piece of plastic & medium size pot to extract water from moisture during the day - A portable heavy duty tent, white color to stay cool... and would be a dream if it was equipped with solar panels in the event I wanted to just chill for a day to charge a few gadgets... althought I haven't found any samples on google... To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. - Hydration backpack to store the water found on the way or attain from moisture - Good dessert boots - Definetly would take this car... plenty of sun in the desert... To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. - bionic ear.. to listen to the critters at night... To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. -a light weight zub-zero sleeping bag... desert gets cold at night... |

I left out obvious clothing items (e.g., shirt, pants, etc.)
Knife Flint and steel firestarter kit Camelbak with biggest hydration bladder (for storing water). Would use the hydration tube to siphon water out of cracks if necessary. Metal pot (for boiling water, cooking) Tarp with paracord Sturdy polyethelene sheet or bag Sunglasses Hat with wide brim Shemagh First aid kit with antihistamine pills Compass Good pair of hiking/scrambling boots Yep. That just about does it... |

I like these threads. You should probably state whether the intent is to survive more or less indefinitely or to survive until rescued or you can walk out. At some point I'll get around to making my list of items. In the meantime . . .
These entrenching tools have a lot of uses. Everything from digging to cooking to cracking someone's skull open.
Are you talking about making a solar still? That's a tricky thing - hard to get enough water out of them in most environments to survive. Still, if it is all you've got, it is better than nothing. I will say these do make interesting afternoon projects for the kids, though! |

it would be until you reach the nearest city or get rescued
Multi-tools are always best. less to carry along the way...
No. I watched a survival show about 3 years ago and one way to extract water in the desert was to simply dig a hole, put the pot on the hole, cover it with the plastic and keep it cover for a while... that in turn will extract water... from somewhere... but certainly an essential trick to survive... |

Fuck that's back-breaking labor, and it's gonna cause you to use up your precious supply of water all the more quicker...
A big polyethlyene bag over a leafy tree branch and tied off (airtight seal) works nicely, too. |

Good too know... actually cactus have a lot of water in them too... so hoping to find a few cactus plans on the desert will be a plus... which is why that little shovel tool will come handy. |

Protein consumes water when it is metabolized. If you are short on water you want to avoid taking in protein for that reason. Some cactuses have edible fruit (carbs = energy)--you just gotta remove the spines (hence the knife)... |

Normally, dehydration and exposure are the killers in the desert...so underpants and a bottle of water

Depends on the desert.
Arizona deserts? All I need is knife, a canteen, a large-brimmed hat, t-shirt and shorts, and a thick jacket. Also would preferably have a backpack to make carrying items easier. Cactuses have some delicious water and there are barrel cactus fruits around. The hat and summer clothes would keep me cool in the day, jacket warm at night. Try to move around at twilight, and sleep during the day. If the moon's out at night, I could do more stuff -- primarily building shelter, hunting, or collecting water. In the Sahara, I'd need some extra stuff for distilling (a polyethylene bag, a coffee mug or open cup, and a few rocks if I couldn't find any). In the Sahara I'd also need some kind of protection against the sand. Hunt at twilight, build things at night, sleep in the day. An entrenching tool also wouldn't hurt, but I could make do with the right rocks. That's for basic survival. If I wanted to really thrive: Crossbow or regular bow with replacement strings Plenty of twine or string Bear traps and various trapping equipment. Tent Tool kit Chemistry set and proper distillation equipment Workbench Farming equipment -- primarily shovel, seeds, tools to make supports, water storage and rain collection equipment, etc. Extra knives Sharpening tool Two-way radio Compass
