Hey everyone I've been actively reading the forums for a while now after I was outed as an INTJ when I took the MBTI (5 times over the past 8 months...you can never be too sure).
Anyway, I thought I'd actually join the forums to engage in the stimulating discussions rather than just read over with glazed over eyes thinking 'that's so me'...which believe me, given the people I usually interact with, that never happens since, as you know, I never meet any females who can actually launch an entirely rational argument without the involvement of hurt feelings or personal offense. I'm a Philosophy grad student just studying my second masters in research although I feel largely misplaced for two reasons....1. I can't stand mainstream philosophy-too impractical and abstract (the point of metaphysics is lost on me) I am researching cognitive science from a philosophical perspective. 2. I'm not a huge fan of professionial philosophers despite the fact that I want to be one. Too many big egos who genuinely believe the world wouldn't spin on its axis if they weren't in it. So yeah being an INTJ female philosopher with narrow philosophical interests and very poor social skills makes for a very solitary existence. Not that I mind but I'd just rather that on those occassions I do interact with others its worth my while and of substance. My supervisors fear of my demeanour is what prompted me to take the test. He is the kind of old school, taskmaster, bulletproof moral code professors of the '70s who everyone, including lecturers, are afraid of and aim to impress and he says i'm intimidating! He says my demeanour is too aloof and distant and I have a godawful poker face because I never smile and glare at him when he is speaking as if he may as well just go and die on account of his sheer incompetence. Usually I'm just digesting what he's saying so I can come up with an efficient response! Any other INTJ females who share this existence? God that was a bit of a rant.....but strangely satisfying. |

Outed?
Never quite thought of it that way, myself, but I'm sure you'll find lots of INTJ females around here, who've had similar experience. There's nothing quite like that unmodified intense stare for utterly freaking out the rest of the population.Welcome! |

I almost went into philosophy. My professors all told me it would be a waste if I didn't. But I wanted to decide something, and all that philosophy seemed to be doing was making it apparent that nothing is black-and-white and nothing is ultimately provable. In the end I went into science, especially after a comment from one professor who said I should go into philosophy because I'd be accepted for jobs anywhere simply due to my being a female. He then went on to talk about how the few female philosophy professors there were pretty awful. Since my integrity is important to me, this was the nail in the coffin of my prospective career in philosophy.
I applaud your interest in cognitive science. Science is the bomb... so terribly practical (usually at least). In any case at least things can be decided. oh yes, and welcome. This is a great place, like a digital home to me. |

Your story sounds awfully familiar, except replace philosophy with fine arts.
Welcome to INTJf! |

Hey, TheIceQueen!
If you're looking for INTJ females with similar experiences to you, I'd recommend exploring the rest of the forum. While the people who do read them are quite welcoming, the introductions section has limited exposure. In any case, please enjoy the forum! |

Howdy, TIQ. I got the same shit from my professors, then I learned that crocheting while I listened kept my eyes down, fingers productive, and profs un-spooked.

There is a quite a lot of us womens on here.
I am the same way you are. I prefer solitude over practicing my excellent social skills. My roommate gets annoyed all the time that I keep to myself in my room. But I did warn him that I am that way. I'm hoping to move into my own apartment sometime later in the year, then I can enjoy my solitude in peace. |

Yeah mainstream philosophy does not appeal to me for the reasons you suggest. I'm into working in the interface between philosophy and cognitive science because it still involves philosophical theorising, yet it involves committing oneself to the science so as the philosophy involved is actually productive as opposed to just sitting one ones hands pondering. |

I avoided philosophy for a similar reason, mainstream philosophy, but i don't mind.
There are many objective thinkers here, i think you will enjoy it. Welcome to the forums. |
