The statement in the title always irks me, now I don't believe I am in general clever, but the above should be translated as "I'm just going to use that saying so I can be seen as clever/witty." Is anyone else irritated by this trait in others?

Some would say you should feel proud. I can see how this is plagiarism, yet you still meant for it to be enjoyed.
What are the odds of you failing to impress an unknown person with the same claim? Not much chance they'll hear it from that same person and claim you stole it off them. |

You're right, pretty much low odds they'll hear it from the same individual. Also, yes, it feels like plagiarism and that is the big issue, it's just the principal of the matter. It feels a tad petty typing this, I just don't understand why it is so difficult for others to come up with their own ideas/thoughts. I suppose it boils down to lack of creativity, or different brain patterns, but these are annoying occurances.

Have you ever been told you were copying someone else who was copying you? D:

This hasn't really happened to me because I don't actually communicate with many people, but one of my family member's wife is like this on Facebook. I see it all the time where she posts a comment on someone else's status saying she is going to steal it, and then she posts it on her own status as her own. Sometimes I wonder if she realizes that everyone can actually see what she is doing.
I find it kind of sad the way some people try so hard to make other people think things of them that they are not. Just be yourself. Is it really that hard? |

As a guy with a personality type revolving around taking other NT's ideas and working to improve and implement them, learn to take a compliment.

It is a compliment, but I can understand how you don't want posers stealing your ideas.

If it's a gem I'll take it, but in conversation I tend to site my sources. "I agree with so-and-so's opinion on this, which is..." Give credit where credit is due.

I'm quoted a lot but usually am given the credit so it doesn't bother me.

I have said that statement myself--it's kind of a flippant way of complementing a person. I don't think I've ever deliberately reused someone's wit without at least saying something like, "okay, this is a second hand story".
It might annoy me if someone really was always using my ideas and not crediting me. Otherwise I don't put much in it. |

Yep, as long as credit is given a decent portion of the time, then I have no qualms. But, obviously, I can't prove whether that is true or not, I'm not omnipresent.

I think it's annoying that you're annoyed.
Sorry - I misphrased. I find it irritating that you're irritated over something so inconsequential. Grow up. You said something presumably clever or funny (at least someone else thought it was) - truly we have no way of knowing the accuracy of their assessment unless you wish to reprint for us here these original, insightful and humorous tidbits that drop from your lips like manna. Purportedly, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But I suppose a good defense to having other people "copy" what you say is to just keep your mouth shut. |

They can steal a clever thought, but they can't steal the ability to generate clever thoughts. Why worry if there's more where that came from?

Therein lies my problem, heh. But I'll admit it is a petty thing to be concerned about. |

I only tend to "use" statements if I think the "author" has phrased it particularly well -- I see no need to think of a new way to phrase a thought if a phrasing already exists that I cannot significantly improve on.
