The shuttle was just the transport and recovery vehicle. It's was still launched with the help of two giant rockets. Compared to the capsules of old the space shuttle is a luxury condo. I don't know about the new capsules with regard to how spacious and comfortable they are going to be, but by most estimates they will be cheaper to operate over the long haul and have the advantage of being able to leave Earth's orbit. So, I have to give the edge to rockets for that reason alone.
