So I realized recently that I care more about animals than I do about people. Can anyone else relate?

Let me elaborate:

I feel more emotionally connected to cats. When I hear about millions of people dying in Haiti, I really don't care. When I hear cats being put to sleep becuase no one will adopt them, I feel sad, angry, depressed, and really want to adopt every single one of them.

Your thoughts?

I'm very much the same way overall. Im defenitely not a cat person and I dont agree with the whole pet business as it creates population problems. I am a dog person. Other then the few people I care about, I don't really get affected by the plight of others. I dont share your concern for the cats but if I see a dog in that position I feel the horrible which is why I want to open my own dog shelter to save lives and educate people.

I completely agree with you. I feel the exact same way... Probably why people think I'm a sociopath. I'm not completely cold, but I would rather hunt the hunter than the hunted. If I saw someone beating someone else up I would get a little upset depending on my mood and if I felt like being a hero, however if I saw someone hitting their pet I would flip out.

On the whole cat topic... Dogs used to be my thing, and I hated cats. I hated them because I didn't know them really. Now I have 4 cats and would adopt them all if I didn't have self control. I found them to be very introverted and have grown to love them... Well, atleast my babies. However, I would protect all animals if I could... It infuriates me how people treat them like insects.

Do stinkbugs and ass roaches* count as animals?

* I'm sure there's some bug out there that could reasonably be characterized as an "ass roach."

Bugs are animals, in terms of taxonomy. I'm just curious if the animal fans include gross animals or just the cuddly ones.

I consider animals and my effection toward them to be a living thing (not including people) that I can see breathing.

I value animals higher then people too. I can't watch animal documentaries. They tend to show animals starving and say, "Well, that's nature!" It's not if you f%%&$ film them. You freaking could do something about it. No one would film a human starving and say, "Oh well, that's life!"

If I consider this quantitatively, it's obvious that animals win the battle. There are maybe ten people in my IRL-world with whom I like to be with. Of course there are many others, for instance at work, who are ok from my point of view. But the rest of human kind is indifferent to me at the moment. I don't want them suffer (well, not all the time at least), but it's really hard for me to connect with faceless, thoughtless strangers.

Unfortunately I can't have pets of my own, but I adore dogs. I'm very interested in many animals: I like to observe them. Somehow I'm also concerned about their health and happiness.I once saw a man kicking a stray cat - I made him stop and I'm sure he'll never forget it. Communicating with animals is usually quite easy after you learn to know the species. Given that they have any interest to communicate with me.

If I consider this qualitatively, I must say animals are still invincible. They make me feel good and they've taught me much more about life and myself than any individual person. I wish I had more time and chances to spend more time with animals.

Mostly cuddly ones. I don't have the same level of protective instinct for bugs that I do for what I think of as animals.

But I'd punch someone in the head if I saw them intentionally torturing an insect, anyway. (Well- I'd fantasize about punching them in the head. Maybe I would do it verbally, instead.)

I'd do my best to stop bad things from happening to people. I don't think I'm a misanthrope. But I do not usually feel the same gut-level, screaming motivation as I do with animals.

Exactly.

Then I started to ponder which animals are the gross ones. Dead ones? If that's the case, I'd still rather spend time with a dead animal and its pack than with a dead people and his family.

But yes, I love animals/living things/systems other than humans. Birds, mammals, insects, trees, plants, star systems, galaxies, fungi, bees, piranhas etc.

Of the animals I've interacted with, cats are by far my favorite. It's odd but all of the cats I've interacted with (except for a few unhealthy ones), liked me right away.

Once, I was walking on a dirt path in a forest and suddenly a cat and I saw each other at the same time. I could tell it was frightened so I didn't move or do anything for a few seconds. Then I made some sounds with my mouth and patted on my pants. The cat responded and immediately rolled on its back and let me rub its belly.

I don't feel more connected to any animal than I do another person. I'm not one to be cruel to animals or hurt them for no reasonand I'll confess a certain fondness for cats, but I reject any notion that animals are on the same moral level as people.

I hate primates. They're dirty, stupid, violent, miserable creatures, humans included.

I don't mind insects. Whenever possible, I try to give them humane treatment (e.g., if they're in my home, I'll take them outside and let them go).

I like just about all animals. I own a few pets some might consider odd as well as a dog, but I don't value them more than people (decent people anyway). I do sometimes find it easier to empathize with an animal as opposed to a human though. I feel like animals are blank slates we sort of project our feelings onto, as opposed to people who we seem to judge with bias, if that makes sense.

I am personally a dog person, and I haven't really had much experience with cats. But as for the poll question, I do prefer animals to humans 100%.

Humans annoy me. Animals do not.
Humans are complicated. Animals are not.
Human to human relationships are complicated. Human to animal relationships are not.
Humans are opinionated. Animals may be opinionated, but they cannot express their opinions. This avoids conflict.

We can't necessarily "control" their behaviour, just "prefer" the simplicity of the behaviour.

I think I care so strongly about animals because they can`t really speak for themselves. If people are tortured or hurt, they can find help (unless the circumstances are preventing them to), the media reports the happenings, whereas animals don`t have a loud enough voice to reach out. The sad thing is, they can only get help from the same species that is mostly responsible for their hurt.

I didn`t vote because I don`t see it as a matter of one above the other. It is true though, that I accept and offer affection easier and without a second thought to other animals rather than people.
