I made a comment to a third party telling them that the evidence they provided about a user's tendency to post in a particular manner was the reason that user was on my ignore list.

How exactly is that "flaming/trolling"?

Posts that serve no purpose other than to flame users annihilate the quality of discussion. Do not make personal attacks. You may critique or disdain argument and opinion posted by users, but you may not extend that method to maligning the users themselves. Do not troll or purposefully attempt to disrupt discussion in threads.

This summary of events is so vague that it isn't exactly anything.

Details. And links, please.

You can't really talk about your ignore list, I think.

It's very hard sometimes, I know.

OK.. I didn't want to violate decor again by repeating the post and the context.

I was responding to http://intjforum.com/showpost.php?p=...&postcount=272, my post is two down from there.

The post isn't there now to reference, but what I remember is you stated another user never says anything important or something like that - and that was the reason said person was on your ignore list.

Basically, you flamed another member of the forum when you said why they were on your ignore list - because the 'why' was derogatory towards the user and served no purpose but to put down the user in front of others.

The "Why" referenced a list of things (compile by another person) that user had said to various folks around the forum. My post was directed to the compiler.

Valiyn is almost right.

Telling someone that you have them on ignore isn't usually deleted for trolling. In the context it is usually used, it tells the person you are debating with that you will no longer be responding to their posts. It's a little harsher than "I'm not going to debate this with you anymore", but it serves the same function. That's usually fine unless you start making a campaign of it.

In this case, your comment wasn't directed at the poster you were ignoring, it was directed at someone else and you were using the fact you ignore the person as a way to dismiss their comments without actually addressing any of the comments or topic of the thread. This no longer serves the function of explaining why you are no longer responding to the poster and actually serves the purpose of trolling the person:

Trolling - posting material that fails the thread topic, attacks a person’s character and will/has incited others to break rules (such as personal attacks or flaming) in response to it.

Except that it does address the topic of the thread, which was civility in the R&M forum. The poster to whom I responded was presenting data as to the ignored user's behavior.

My comment was intended to be helpful to others who have a problem with this kind of posting in stating my solution to the problem.

It does not. The civility of R&M is not advanced or addressed by the airing of exactly which users are on your ignore list.

You didn't even quote the person you say you were responding to nor did your post immediately follow theirs. Their post was already heading into the realm of off-topic. Using it to springboard a comment about you ignoring the person isn't going to be any closer to being on-topic.

And people calling other people trolls, morons, douches, assholes, and the like because they, from the goodness of their hearts, want to ensure that other people don't waste their time talking to that person is still flaming/trolling, no matter how helpful they intended it. We don't moderate based on your intent. The way you presented your 'solution' was trolling.

Technically, it is, albeit indirectly. But I've seen far worse go unchecked.

1. Notice the colourless tepidity of the troll above, as said troll self-congratulates upon being above trolling, while excusing a proven troll.

2. Checking pomposity, dissembling and failure to think clearly are very worthy trolls. Of course, pompous, obfuscatory fabricators scream unfair! atrocity! being checked like that, unwilling to come to terms with the fact they've lost [tho never really earned] rights to civility and respect for perpetually committing what can be said to be pathological intellectual dishonesty.

3. Start or enter a Support Thread to further troll "the user" in question.

4. Get checked.
