According to the following article, researchers have discovered that penile nerve cells emit hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell) just prior to sexual intercourse, which causes the penis to become erect:

Does anyone here think that they have been able to detect an erection by smell ? Are women (or other men for that matter) able to detect when a man is aroused despite his best efforts to appear cool and unaffected ? If a smell is detectable, is it the rotten egg smell or is it something else ? |

Very interesting. I'd think though that the chemical would remain contained within the skin, and therefore undetectable to the nose.

I would think that an aroused man might also be perspiring slightly (getting warm and flushed) and that that would be a more noticeable scent than the erection, especially if it is located under a couple layers of clothing.

Sounds like an experiment you shouldn't have much trouble performing.

In the name of science, I just watched some porn.
The answer is no. It smells no differently than when non-erect, despite being significantly closer to my nose. |

The thing about hydrogen sulfide is that it deactivates the olfactory nerves. The harder you sniff, the less you will detect it. In large concentrations it can kill you. Better to pace yourself on the porn...

I'd imagine that any sulfides from the groin bacteria feasting on the oily crotch sweat and dried semen from the last hastily cleaned masturbatory ejaculation or from the fecal residue on the exterior of the anus would completely eclipse the olfactory impact of the ones emanating through the pores of the penis, unless you were a golden retriever that is.

I call BS on that article.
Just look at all the other bloody "articles" on that website. The purported research article based on Italian scientists isn't directly linked. Only the university is. And the talk is clearly advertising for Vaigra/Cialis. |

Have to agree with you here. I've never been able to smell an erection, but it's oh so easy to see when a guy is getting turned on. At least with my partners... It could be the bedroom eye thing, or just something I can sense. |

Not only does the article seem really questionable, but rather unimportant. The vagina is so well shaped to the task of emitting compelling aromas, that the entire room ends up smelling like sex if you close the door.

No I cannot but if this is true, I'm certain a dog or pig can smell it even if that means having to be upclose and personal.

Although I have never smelled Suplhur in that area, any detectible penile odor of any kind gets politely turned away. However, balls do have a distinct smell. Whats that all about?

That would be quite something. Step into a room wearing some badass aviators and sucking on a toothpick. Saying; i can smell an erection...
But seriously what smells must be either sweat or a batch from an erection gone off. |

I can't wait to see how the college research papers go with this... "Well, the pay is $7.50 an hour... four hours a day.... we want you to um... sniff some things... and tell us if they have an odor."

Since it's the penile neurons emitting sulfides and not epithelial cells, i doubt the human nose is going to be able to detect them. The chemicals are likely going to stay inside, doing what they do, while the outside does what it does, smelling as penisly as usual, erection or no. Gotta read past the first paragraph of the article you posted, dude.
The possible applications for ED medications is interesting, though. I wonder if the sulfides are a cause or an effect of the erection. The article says they're released as part of the mechanism that causes an erection, but it doesn't specify whether they're causing the erection or just part of the process. |

I'm interested in finding out if people can smell one under normal conditions, for instance in an office setting, regardless if it due to hydrogen sulphide or not. I read on another thread that some people can smell when a woman is ovulating (due to the pheromones released) so I wonder whether an erection was smellable as well. |

Erections are much more temporary and unpredictable than ovulation, plus i think they cause less chemical impact on the body.
I think, based on the fact that ovulating women produce different pheromone signatures, that it's likely that a man who has frequent erections may have a different pheromone "smell" than a man who rarely has them, assuming the gap in erections is caused by a hormonal difference. However, i don't know if any minute-to-minute pheromone differences could be attributed to having erections. It would be a hard thing to pin down considering all of the other variables involved in having an erection |

I would think an aroused teenager would be carrying a large calculus book in front of him.

I just have one question: If this 'hydrogen sulphide' is responsible for erectile behavior, this might put Viagra out to lunch, at least 'female Viagra'. |

Doesn't a rush of nitrous oxide to the penis also contribute to an erection? Do you get high on the laughing gas?
Lol, I don't think you can smell it. |

How the heck would I tell the difference? The only time my nose is near enough to a penis is when it's already standing at attention anyway.
(And here I thought that smell was just the usual scant male hygiene. LOL) |
