Zygmunt Bauman's fine study of the Holocaust as "a rare, yet significant and reliable, test of the hidden possibilities of modern society."

Interesting, and a very fine study, especially of the enabling factors, though I'm not so clear on the theory of morality being put forward here. I'm curious about your thoughts on a couple of questions:

1. According to the summary, Bauman argues that market-driven pluralist societies are "less fruitful" ground, but could corporatisation be seen as a new form of a highly rationalized bureaucracy, with different scope and aims? Or, to broaden the question, do you think that a new form of racist social engineering, not located in the state, has the potential to follow a similar path? (Or is that sort of an empty question, dependent on whether you view the state form as morphing or declining or both.

2. I'm skeptical about the conclusion to Chapter 4, not because I don't believe that democracy provides safeguards, but because I think a clearer definition of democracy and an explanation of the mechanism of safeguards is missing. But obviously this is a summary. Does the book flesh this out in detail?

In any case, this looks like a good read. Thanks for putting up the summary; the book's getting added to my wish list.

A fun experiment to take a look at too, regarding of how the Holocaust could've occurred:
