Random topic, I suppose, but I've always wondered about this.
I've encountered very many people who shower every day and think it's "gross" to wear the same article of clothing again after you already wore it, regardless of whether you wore it the day before or a few weeks before and didn't get it dirty or sweat in it at all. On the contrary, I found it very strange that people thought it was gross that I didn't shower or wash my hair everyday, and that I (gasp!) re-wear my clothes many times before washing (with the exception of underwear). I personally don't shower every day as I don't think it's necessary, especially if I haven't been exercising. I only shower 2-3 times a week and wash my hair just once a week (doesn't get oily/greasy or smelly). I also do laundry probably every 1.5-2 months, and I don't think that's weird at all because I have a reasonable amount of clothes (and it helps that I re-wear them). No one's ever told me that I smelled bad. Also, just wondering if showering/laundry habits are a personal thing, or if it has to do with personality--I mean, are logical/rational people more likely to have to same habits as I do because they can get past the obviously ridiculous and unsubstantiated "ick-factor" of not showering frequently or not wearing a new set of clothes each day? |

I'm the same way: with the exception of socks and undies, everything gets recycled and re-worn. Shirts go straight into the laundry bin only if I sweated profusely - otherwise they can be worn again at least once. Jeans and such can be rotated every few days.
Unless it gets really hot at work, I shower only every other day. Due to the sheer amount of clothing essentials that I've stockpiled, I can go for months without doing laundry... Edited to add:
I think it's a matter of nurture to a large degree. If people are conditioned from an early age that their bodies are gross, disgusting and ought to be cleansed every few hours ( |

I wear only certain clothes to work, of which i have many so that's not an issue. I wash my hair very infrequently because of my ethnicity and generally don't shower everyday unless its disgustingly humid outside...

Keep in mind that most people are too polite to tell another that they smell like a crock of Schmidt.

I shower every other day. My hair gets greasy if I don't and I figure I may as well wash the rest of me if I'm going to bother washing my hair. I wear clothes again if they aren't really dirty. Just because I wore them once doesn't mean they're soiled or smelly so I don't see the point in washing them every time. The more you wash your clothes, the faster they will get worn out anyway, so it doesn't make much sense to ruin perfectly good clothes by washing them when they aren't actually dirty. I do, however, wear clean underwear every day.

I wear clean underwear everyday and most days will put on a clean t-shirt but I wear my trousers for a week (I'd run out too quickly otherwise).

Shower at least once a day.
I wear everything once except jeans and socks as of recently. I don't get around to doing whites often enough and I need to buy more black socks. I always iron both before using again. My cloths do tend to get dirty from the exterior as well as from me sweating so that is my rational. If I only wear a shirt for say 2 hours or something I might swap it with another one so that I could use it again later. I could careless what other people wear/do. I know some pretty poor and ill people who wear the same thing everyday and I don't even care to imagine or inquire about their hygiene habits. At work there are some people who don't wear deodorant for cultural/religious reasons and honestly it distracts me every now and then, but I'm appalled when anyone brings it up in conversation. |

I shower everyday, I can't go to bed 'feeling dirty'. I recycle most of my clothes except for undies. I sometimes wear socks more than once depending on how active and/or hot it was during the day.

I shower at least once a day, usually twice. I may wear a pair of pants more than once between washes, but that's it. Shirt, socks, etc. I change every day. Dirty socks feel disgusting and shirts start to stink.
Indeed they are. I once had an employee with whom I had to discuss their hygeine situation. They were surprised because no one had said anything to them, yet everyone had commented to me about it. |

The only think I don't wash every time they're worn is my pants.

True, but I've discussed this with my roommate before, and she has the same hygiene habits as I do, and neither of us thinks the other smell bad. |

Showers twice a day. Pants typically washes every other wear; shirts daily.

My hair and skin tend toward oily which is very annoying
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. except that I am told sometimes that I look younger than I am--oily skin may have something to do with that. I have to wash my face at least in the morning and evening and sometimes three times. I shower every morning and sometimes later in the day if I've been exercising heavily. I wash my hair every day in the summer. During the other seasons, I can get away with every other day, unless I've exercised hard enough to make my hair sweaty. (Yuck.) As for clothes, I wash clothes after wearing them except pants and skirts, which I'll wear several times. |

Ideally I shower daily. There isn't always time in the schedule. On those days like that I can get away with just washing my face, neck and hair in a sink.
Clothes (unless I was sweating in them) get multiple use. When I've worn them the equivalent of 24 hours they go in the dirty laundry. I change my clothes throughout the day depending where I go. Kinda silly to throw something I wore just for 4 hours in laundry. |

Shower daily, wear clothing once. Can't stand not feeling clean to start the day.

I would shower more often if my hair could stand it, but unfortunately too much washing absolutely ruins it. My frequencies vary depanding and it could be anywhere between 4-10 times a week, depanding on my activity level. For clothes, I use my discretion. If it is dirty or I think it is dirty, then I wash it.
Good thing I don't live in the east coast anymore. I hated all that humidity and had to shower 3-4 times a day in the summer. In the winter, it was so cold and poorly insulated, so I had to shower 2-3 times a day to keep my blood circulating. I think the weather really makes a difference. |

I shower every day because a) I have naturally oily skin and b) I have very very long hair. Occasionally I do skip a day, but that's pretty rare and usually it's because I wasn't going anywhere.
I always change out my tops daily, because that's what gets stinky. There are very few deodorants I can use that don't spark an allergic reaction, and what's available is not the most effective stuff, plus I live in the the south and it's just damned hot here. Oh yeah, I need to change shirts. I'll wear pants more than once though, especially jeans. Jeans I will wear until they practically stand up in the corner, unless they're floured from baking or muddy from gardening or I splash something on them. I typically wear my bathrobe for about a week before I wash it. I wear my bathrobe quite a bit though, since I'm home most of the time. My kids typically shower every other day. And that's all they need to do. As long as they don't stink and their hair doesn't look greasy, then I guess they're washing enough. My husband showers daily and it's completely necessary for him to do so. Although I will say that since he's been treated to remove the dairy allergy he's not as musky as he used to be. Interesting, eh? ---------- Post added 07-30-2010 at 10:52 PM ----------

OK, I have to ask...who wouldn't be wearing deodorant for religious reasons? That's a new one on me.
Yes, it will do that. I'm in my 50s with not a sign of a wrinkle, while I know other women who start crow's feet in their 30s already. |

Yes, I realize that everyone is different. But I encounter so many putrid people in public that I suspect they must be oblivious. |

Just because nobody has said you smell bad doesn't mean you don't.
I shower daily even if I don't exercise much; we still perspire. |

I think I remember an article saying that it usually takes about 2-3 days for clothing like jeans to go bad and smell. I don't mind reusing clothing once or twice before putting them in the washing machine just as long as I haven't dirtied them up too much.
As for taking a shower every day, that is a different story. The maximum I'll allow myself to not take a shower is about 3 days (including the day I took the shower.) Other than that, if I am going out or something, I usually take a shower. Showering every day is similar to washing your hair everyday, doing it too often could mess with your body in a bad way (like drying up skin of all sorts.) I'm not too familiar with hair. I think it goes along with if you tend to get oily hair pretty quickly, washing your hair might help. If your hair doesn't get oily that fast, you don't have to wash your hair that often. Certain types of shampoo can even roughen up your hair and mess it up if you use it every day. |

I shower at least once a day. I also re wear most of the clothes depending on if they're dirty and if I'm going out. For instance: if I'm only going to be sitting in front of my computer the whole day then there isn't any real reason to care if the pants got a few stains of ketchup on them. But if I am going out to meet someone(Yeah right) or going too school then I change into clean clothes. At the other hand I always change my socks everyday.
On the washing: I don't wash my clothes as I still live with my parents, but I throw the clothes into the washing room when I've used them a few times(with the exceptions of t-shirts, underwear and socks.) |
