I confess: I spend most of my time in my own home, doing work on my dissertion and researching my special interests. Basically, I have a thirst for knowledge and a "need to know".
I don't spend time in the library because the lights, noises, and people in it distract me. If I have to go there, I will go to copy an article or borrow a book so I can read it at home. I occassionally go out to a cafe with my laptop to work on my dissertation while drinking my coffee. I also have a fondness for travel and am known to rent rooms in foreign countries, doing pretty much the same thing I do at home.....research! Let's hear it from you. |

Yes, there is nothing better than staying at home reading up on what I have the sudden desire to read up on. It could range from really productive stuff like my next semester's lecture notes or to the "pointless" ones like the taste of various wines (and laugh while reading it as various seemingly ridiculous flavours are being described).
While I read on a broad range of subjects, my laziness in taking down notes and my poor memory usually results in me forgetting pretty much all of it in a few days. And I don't mind that since I would be reading up on some other subjects by then, working out the doubts that pop out in my head from nowhere and gaining tremendous satisfaction and joy from learning random facts. |

Hello Castalia,
I do spend a lot of spare time online researching a variety of subjects. I do make a point though of getting away from it regularly thought to keep fit, and if I have a building project on the go that takes absolute priority. My research time is often for practical applications, planning building projects, and now that I have expanded into Solidworks CAD i'm spending even more time online researching tutorials and designing. |

I like to do this but I don't have enough time to much at the moment unfortunetely
To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. . I don't have enough time for too much outside of university at the moment actually, with all the end of semester projects and exams coming up. That's what holidays are for I guess. I'm quite excited about next semester though, since I will be taking classes on areas that I'm really interested in and have read and researched about on my own for the past year or so. I'm really interested in A broad range of topics basically centered on theoretical computer science: Algorithms, complexity theory, graph theory, combinatorics and discrete maths, operations research, especially combinatorial optimisation, artificial intelligence and data mining. Next year I will be taking a course on algorithms and data structures and two courses on discrete maths! Very different subjects though, One taught from the computer science department, focused more on logic, recursion, induction, sets, functions, relations and automata theory, and one from the maths department, focused more on game theory, graph theory, operations research and linear programming, so basically all of these will be strongly aligned to my interests. And next year I get to take a whole subject on Graph Theory!! :D, and another the semester later on the Theory of Computation :D, plus a more theoretical combinatorics course. Majorly looking foward to those subjects. |

Yes, yes, yes. Most of my spare time is spent at home browsing on the internet for information I like.

I need to know and this drives me to research my interests voraciously. I am either researching stuff on my laptop or reading two-three books a week. The difference is I no longer hide my nerdiness; I am up to my eyeballs in knowledge. This tends to be a help to others, yet I am told at least once a week to stop analyzing so much. Oh well, someone has to do it....

Me, too.
I love to learn. So, what I do is go to one site, then follow the links just to see where I end up. Start with gardening, go thru old house restoration and end up in the London newspaper. Now if I could just remember what I learn........ |

I usually go back and forth between keeping up on politics, researching, and working/editing. Otherwise I waste time with a game. If I get into a huge research binge it'll eat away an entire day.

Yeah, I have a tendency to fill spare time with researching things that interest me. Every since the internet became well developed enough to suffice, I've stayed out of libraries and read less books and used primarily the internet. Unfortunately, I can lose large expanses of time that, while I hadn't decided to do anything else in particular with, I failed to check on the opportunities that were out there for something to do that would be better for me. Sometimes I do put things off like small errands, or social things I am ambivalent about. In fact, I should get off this forum/wikipedia/Newsweek and go join my friends.

yes
Generally random movie/tv facts, health/science news or current events. Sometimes I do something useful with my research and turn it into a wikipedia article |

Yes, but that is because my wife and kids are a large part of my interests. Most of my time at home is spent with them. Time I spend on the internet at home is usually after they are asleep or when I'm home alone. Most of that time is spent reading email or on here, not really doing any research. Research on the internet takes a lot of time unless I have a good idea where to start, so I go elsewhere to find out good starting points and then the time I do spend in research at home is usually pretty small.

Oh yes.
I can 'waste' hours reading up about anything that happens to catch my imagination at the time. Yesterday it was piracy in the 18th century. Fascinating stuff. Today it was Sweden, for some reason. I have a pretty good memory and tend to spout out at useless facts at random intervals. It's kind of my party trick - although it also happens when I'm drunk... |

I have had a tendency to do that but I try not to because it's a waste of time. I try to only research things that I need to. You need to use your time well by focusing on the most valuable thing you could be doing at any given time.

Yes, it's probably why I typically test as an introvert. I enjoy sitting around and gobbling up information to play with. The trouble is I need reciprocation, if there is no one to run to and share my revelations with, I feel like I am missing something.

No. I spend most of my time at home doing the things that support my life. Maintaining my home as sanctuary (ordered, picked up, peaceful), preparing food for home and takeaway consumption, laundry, personal hygiene, sleep, keeping everything organized so that I can get on smoothly with whatever's on the agenda each day. Work, gardening, kickboxing classes, grocery shopping, errands, that sort of thing... Reading for entertainment fills in most of the cracks, and larger chunks of time for "personal interest" activities have to be scheduled.
Not to say I don't enjoy researching interests when they're on my mind and time opens up (one of the pleasures of this place is the leads I pick up, to other interesting things, so I surf through most days)...most days I'm just not prepared to pay the opportunity costs. |

My family always tells me I need to get out more and that I spend too much time online. But while they are on social networks BSing like FB, I am researching.
I used to go to the library and take a big eggcrate on wheels and fill it up every week at the library. After I got introduced to the internet, about the time I was in 7th/8th grade, I left the library and got hooked on the internet. I always keep a notepad with me to jot down things that come up thorughout the day that I *have* to research when I get home lol. After I find something interesting I run to my boyfriend and/or mom and tell them. It always seems a waste to not share the knowledge To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 2 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |
