Lately I've started to realize that I have a tendancy, on any forum I'm a member of, to start threads without participating in them too much if at all. (Unless of course somebody asks me a question.) I'm not sure why I do this, although I still like to read the replies and see how the conversation unfolds. Does anybody else ever do this? Or does anybody think they know why someone would do this?

Well I'm starting to think it might be because I usually get everything I have to say out of the way in my first post, so I don't feel a need to post any more.

I often start threads looking for other people's opinions so I don't post in the thread myself. I don't usually post in any thread more than a couple of times since I can usually get my point across by then, or I realize that I'm never going to get my point across to whoever I'm arguing with. Quite often someone else will have already responded with what I would have said (occupational hazard when there are others who match my way of thinking) so there isn't any point in me posting. I do read all the responses in threads I make and read along in threads I've posted in for a few days at least.

I often forget that I've started threads about 12 hours after I start them. Without the auto subscription feature I'd be screwed.

Hah well you already posted additionally in this thread, so you have that going for you!

In regards to your OP, I often do the same thing. Mainly it's because I don't want to influence the discussion unless it's moving too far away from being useful. It's more interesting to see the thread unwind and take on a life of its own.

I do like to pop back in near the end and thank everyone for their ideas/participation, however.

I don't start a topic unless I am going to participate in it..though considering I have only started 12 posts and most of them have 5 or less replies. Not sure I count
