What is the low tech solution to putting human breast milk into a storage container to later be fed to a baby by the dad? Can it be extracted without a breast pump or a hungry baby? What did women do before breast pumps, feed solely from the tit? Can you get the milk out like hand milking a cow? If not, is it worth the extra money for the super fancy models? This all may sound silly but first time parenthood is on the horizon and I'm trying to make sense of what my wife and I are going to need for our newborn. There are millions of products for babies and 99% of them seem stupid to me. Seriously, humans were born and cared for in caves for thousands of years, and it worked, we're here.
Moms, how often do you use your stroller? What is the least used baby item you bought or were given?

You can do it by hand, I had a friend who did it exclusively like that, she would go to the bathroom at work, hand express her breasts and put the milk in the refrigerator to take home to her husband who was a stay at home dad. Breast feeding is not easy and the more you do it the more milk you will produce, that is why some women who complement their feedings with formula don't produce enough milk and give up. check out

I used the stroller every day at around 4 months on to go for walks it's wonderful to see their faces full of wonder at the world around. Hope this helps. |

Yes, hand expression is an option but it is slow and annoying. There's no way my baby would still be drinking breastmilk if I didn't have a pump at work. It's not a fancy model, but it gets the job done. It's a Pump n' Style Advanced I think, and I got it used (just boiled the parts).
We just got a stroller and it's only been used once, but then again he's only 4 months right now. If you have a baby carrier like the Baby Bjorn the stroller might not get used much. The Baby Bjorn might be inappropriate for some outings though, and the stroller seems to be good for older babies so it's not like they won't use it. We bought a decent one for 25 bucks at wal-mart. Least-used baby items have probably been the pacifier and cloth sling. We have an automatic swing, bouncer, activity saucer, mobile set (he lies on this mat under an arch that has toys hanging from it) stroller, playpen, sling, and carrier. Most of these things are great, especially the bouncer and swing. The nursing pillow was handy when I was first learning. Not everything has to be the expensive kind, and not everything has to be brand new. |

You can definitely hand express. In fact, I don't remember my mom having a breast pump for the first of one or two of my sibs. I did use the stroller a lot. There were things I didn't use as much as I would have thought simply because my son didn't like them. The playpen for instance. He wasn't interested in staying in that thing - nor any other contraption that was going to serve to keep him hemmed in somewhere. Also, a lot of people bought us small newborn or 3 month clothes, and he grew so quickly he barely got to wear any of them. I probably would have waited and bought clothes later as he needed them. I would have bought things like playpens later when/if he needed them. Same for baby swings, etc. |

I used the stroller for shopping at the mall.
Otherwise I tried to hold the babies as much as possible while in public (at home, too.) Least used items - baby clothes, cute, but babies grow quickly and some were just too cute to risk a spit-up on. |

The LaLeche League also rents VERY nice pumps for a fair price. As far as my experience, I was not able manually express...it left me bruised and frustrated. Try it for yourself, but if it doesn't work out know that you can get a nice quiet pump quite easily.
