I'm 20, and my hair may be starting to thin a bit at the crown. I'd like to keep my hair, as I'm rather attached to it (well, for the moment at least :-P). It's not a primary concern, but still, as a large part of my external identity for the past 7 years has involved having amazing hair, it's something I'd rather not worry about.

That said, I want to know if anyone is taking Dutasteride (brand name Avodart) for either hair loss or Prostate issues?(I don't much care which one, and you don't have to specify if you don't feel comfortable) If you are, could you relate what the effects have been in terms of hair retention/regrowth since you've started, and more importantly; side effects (while the idea of having boobs is amusing, I'm sure I'd tire of them. And impotence doesn't sound fun either. I understand both of these are rare side-effects. But are they rare in the sense that they very rarely happen, or that it's rare to happen at a degree worth reporting). I understand initial hair shedding is common, so that's not something I'd count as a side-effect.

Besides this, I was wondering if anyone had info on how DHT is synthesized in the hair follicle? And possible information on what bonds with DHT. If I am balding, I'd like to at least take advantage of the first few months of it to carry out some science.

ketaconazole which is the active ingredient in nizoral brand dandruff shampoo (not all dandruff shampoos) neutralizes DHT. leave it in for the length of your shower if you can, it doesnt matter if you don't have dandruff. after doing this for several weeks you may notice a difference, and you can try going to every other day, or a few times a week, or once a week. nizoral is pricey and it lathers differently than other shampoos but a good lather isnt really necessary, just put it on the effective areas.

b vitamins and zinc are important to hair health, if you are particularly stressed your hair could thin from that as well. it happened to a close friend of mine. since he has cleaned up his diet and is sure to include plenty of b vitamins and zinc, the hair on top of his head has grown back. he also uses nizoral although not everyday. he does have a receding hairline though, the points on his forehead have gotten a little deeper, but the amount of hair on top of his head is undeniably more present.

i know someone who takes propecia with good results, has had no more hair loss since starting it. he says no side effects but then i guess i will have to take his word for it i'm not going to ask him if he's impotent

Thank you. Yes, I had originally considered ketaconazole, but it doesn't seem to have effects at the same level I want (though I'm probably not justified in wanting effects past that level anyway).

Propecia is Finasteride, which is less effective (and more side-effect heavy) than Dutasteride. If I take either, it will probably end up being the latter. I have recently begun reading (largely baseless) speculation that amphetamine may cause hair-loss. Can anyone chime in on this?
