Jez, frankly, the chat functions have always proven to me to be 'too quick'. everywhere i have tried them, they seem to be short, choppy responses. so, it's not 'this chatroom', it's the concept for me...it's like saying 'good morning' on the subway, and then the person you said that to gets off the next stop.

Same here. (Except it was once and the forum was down.)

I didn't even know anyone there, oddly.

Register your forum nickname! Type: "/msg nickserv REGISTER password email", without quotes. Make sure the slash is the first character, no spaces before it.

Just tried it.

This is way to complicated said what you have to do to register.
In laymens terms what is it what you exactly have to do to register ?

You type it into the chat message box like so:

/msg nickserv register examplepassword user@host.com

nickserv controls account registration, and “/msg nickserv” sends a message to it. “register” is the request and applies to your current nick in chat (so make sure it is the one you want), “password” and “email” are the inputs demanded by the register command, and have nothing to do with the password or email associated with the forum accounts, so use what ever you like.

Much clearer is to say it in a format like this :

Type the following line :
/msg nickserv register "examplepassword" "exampleemailadress"

Where "examplepassword" and "exampleemailadress" have to be changed to your desired password and your own emailadress.

It now reads like you have to insert the following line "/msg nickserv REGISTER password email".

I registered but now that I have I am unsure of the purpose of it. Now I have to confirm I am me every single time I log on to chat. it's a PIA.

No one else can use your name and therefore pretend to be you if it's registered. They get the PIA message too.

Less the quotes, I am rather inclined to agree. As it is now, the message in the topic is merely quoting the NickServ help dialogue. For better or worse.

Yeah, the new chatroom was humming along this weekend. People were popping in and out and it was rocking in the evenings. It's like the Lounge or the Blogs, only better. A few serious discussions broke out as well.

Then people get confused and put the quotes in their command...

For those using mibbit on the chatroom page, I have added a list of commands that will work in mibbit that hopefully explains it better than the topic title (the commands listed next to the mibbit client may not work in other irc clients though).

If anyone else has any problems using irc commands or has any suggestions please let me know. I'm still working on getting more help pages up.

I do use the new chatroom. I liked the old one from before, but I suppose it may be since I had been there for about two years.

I don't like chat rooms. It's too much like talking to people face to face. It's just a lot of inane small talk with random people who don't mean anything to you. Just a waste of time.

I tried the old one, more than a year back, when the forum was quiet for some reason. I'd never done chat before, but thought maybe I'd find some people I knew in there to hang around with and entertain myself.

It took several tries to get the link to work, and I finally got logged in- (I think)- but I couldn't sort out just what I was looking at, or what I was supposed to do. People I didn't recognize were already having a conversation about something which seemed kind of exclusive, and I had nothing to say to them even if I could figure out how. I was already uneasy, and just couldn't see myself butting in. And then I didn't know if they could see me sitting in there watching or not, so I panicked and closed my whole browser. :embarassed:

This one is muuuch better. I downloaded the Pidgin client, which seems nicely visually intuitive. I know what I'm looking at. And I do know pretty much everyone there, by name, (cue Cheers theme song) and have received not-very-mocking help when I can't figure out my ass from my elbow. (I do NOT like publicly struggling with learning something, but I've found that as soon as I learn something, I've needed to pass the info on to someone else who is also just getting their "chat legs," as LP says.)

Definite potential time-suck. Like the Community threads, but in realtime. A very nice change, Jezebel, I think this is good.

You can't use our awesome chatroom until you have 15 or more posts and have been registered on the forum for at least one week. Log in or get to posting!

That's why... and I think this is #16...
