As for thrash metal, I thought bands like Anthrax and Megadeth and early Metallica were thrash metal? DRI and COC are what many would call crossover thrash, bridging the gap between hardcore and thrash.

We always just called DRI/COC thrash, and Metallica/Anthrax "speed metal."

I've been jamming all week to Megadeth's new album. Dear god that album is absolutely fantastic.

I think the best doom works are from Katatonia. First two albums "Dance of December Souls" and "Brave Murder Day" are unique. It is a MUST! And if you liked it don't forget to check October Tide's works.

Talking about Mayhem... The only worth of attention album is "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". As Varg Vikernes said "why listen to anything else, when there's such a black metal piece?". I fully agree.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

Too bad about the drunken walrus vocals though.

Damn. I'm way late and no one will look at my self-indulgent list.

Helmet (the heavy heavy)
Melvins (I call it metal)
Cannibal Corpse
Mark of Cain

that's a big list you've got there.

Drunken walrus?

. Back in the day (1992–1993) Atilla was just a normal guy, who wanted to do vocals differently than his departed colleagues did. Later on from 2004 he started to grind shit with his stupid outfits, his vocals wasn't and remain not the same.
But in "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" I think it's something you get used to. Personally, I love it.
I assume you prefer Dead...

Thanks! I'm familiar with some Gorgoroth. I really liked Limbonic Art and Anaal Nathrakh as well as Dark Tribe. Old Man's Child was all right, but probably not something I'd buy. Hecate Enthroned was probably my favorite of the lot. That shit is sweet!!!

I have In The Nightside Eclipse, and while it's good it's not one of my favorites. I'll have to check out I Am the Black Wizards.

Thanks guys!

Vocals can completely ruin an otherwise awesome band for me. I really like Shining, but don't always dig on the Fozzy Bear vocals. Likewise, though it's not metal, Jello Biafra's vocals do nothing for me and I've never bought a DK album as a result.

I LOOOOOOOVE the vocals on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

Who can resist the seductive crooning of "FYOOOOOooooOOOOoooOOOOoooOOOONEEERAL fog"?

I completely agree. It's their most epic work, vocals or no (I like the vocals, haha).

The vocals are fucking terrible. Unlike his undead pals, Cashar opts to deal with the dread chill of the north by packing on some pounds and rumbling in an excess of throaty blubber. His performance on De Mysteriis is a visage of lard. Whenever I hear it, I find two yellowish tusks arcing down either side of the microphone.

Uuuhhh uhuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuuuhheeeeeerrrrrrr uuuuhhhhhhh.

Ruined.

There's some interesting stuff in this thread and you've convinced me to branch out in my metal listening.

Most of the stuff I listen to now falls somewhere under the umbrella of 'prog' - Obscura, Spiral Architect, Atheist, Blotted Science, Behold...the Arctopus, Cynic, Watchtower, Spastic Ink, etc. Opeth, Strapping Young Lad and Isis are great too.

But after reading this thread I've got a whole bunch of new bands to check out.

Too right...

Mayhem was born with the addition of Dead and Hellhammer and died when Dead plastered the walls with his brains. I watched recently a live version of freezing moon on youtube with Maniac and the best I could think of was... at least it isn't Attila and those vocals.. The whole performance was uninspired crud.

It's highly likely you'd be interested in the post metal/post rock stuff: Cult of Luna, Agalloch's Ashes, Pelican and even stuff such as GYBE! etc

I laughed, but as a longtime metal fan... well, you have to have high tolerance for the aesthetically ludicrous.

I mean, look at Ozzy's vocals.
