I have yet to comprehend what qualities of Lady Gaga have brought her to the forefront of the entertainment industry. Why is she popular, and is she here to stay?

I like her music. She has a pretty voice.

I don't like her personal appearance, I saw a video of hers yesterday it was very shocking. Her morbid approach has a lot to do with her fame as she is not pretty.

I saw her perform live and she's a very good showperson, and (unlike say Britney or Madonna) can actually sing.

Her looks aren't my cup of tea, but I'm willing to date people outside of my lookset if they lead interesting lives, and Lady Gaga can be on my datable list.

I can honestly say, I have never heard her; and I probably never will.

And no; I don't live in a box

Marketing. She's just another product that the machine churned out. Another one will come tumbling off the assembly line soon.

I've never researched her, but I heard she was a song-writer before getting her break, so she might not be just a product of the system.

I have to admit that her songs have catchy beats and clever lyrics. There's not much more you can ask for in a pop song. Whether or not she can keep it up remains to be seen. So far she seems to have only one trick, but she might just be milking that for as long as possible before moving on to the next one. You can never tell until they move on or disappear.

I shamelessly admit that I'm a fan of hers.
Her acoustics showcase her talents so much better than music videos and CD tracks.

I'm a Lady Gaga fan. She has good songs and she was a piano prodigy in her childhood, so she's not exactly talentless. She also isn't trying to hide her quirks; they've become a marketing tool.

The thing I don't understand is that there are so many other would-be starlets out there with songs that are just as catchy and looks just as good, what makes Lady Ga Ga so special that she gets a level of fame an order of magnitude higher than the rest?

I'm a fan. I love how eccentric she is, and she does seem to have actual music talent.

Lets just hope the pop world doesn't destroy her, she already seems like shes psychologically unstable.

People respond well to formulaic, overproduced music performed by people who can dance and adhere to all the current image norms.

She can sing, she can dance, shes very charismatic, thats all it takes really.

Yes there are better singers, better dancers, and people with more charisma, but it's rare that an individual is good at all three.

Madonna can sing, you probably didn't listen to her work from the 80s so you think this new stuff is the best of Madonna. Ladygaga is like a magician who can sing, while Madonna is like a dancer/model/singer. If Madonna were the Madonna from the 80s I'd want to date her over LadyGaGa, Madonna has the qualities. But if you ask who would be more well rounded of an entertainer as far as being able to put on a show, or do acting, or fashion, LadyGaGa is off to an incredible start and I think shes here to stay just like Britney and Miley.

Where do you get the idea she is unstable?

Her Charisma! The same reason Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears are bigger stars than Gwen Stefani or Christina Aguilera. You can have all the talent in the world and if you don't have charisma to go along with it you wont even get a record deal. You wonder why Michael Jackson's thriller sold 100million albums? Yes it was musically brilliant but Michael Jackson probably had more charisma than any artist who ever lived. When you think of the moonwalk you think of him.

I personally like her music. The beats are catchy, the lyrics are catchy. As far as her looks go, I have a feeling she knows she doesn't have the best looking face, so she uses wild makeup or hats or whatever she can think of to give her an edge. She definitely knows what she needs to do to stay ahead of the game.

No. Not really. Read her wiki page.

Personally, she is a great musician. Great voice, great on the piano, although she doesn't reflect this in how she behaves, shes probably one of the more talented musicians out there.

Read the wiki page... not sure what you were trying to get at. She may be marginally talented in comparison with the other mainstream commercial robots artists, but that's like being the world's tallest midget.

Saying "Oh, but she can actually sing" is the same old same old. That's the phrase that's been tossed around for Britney, Christina, Amy Lee, and all the other pop princesses. She'll be shelved like the rest of them when she stops raking in cash for her label.

Edit: The second comment above was not directed at anyone specifically.

Of course, if anyone is a fan of hers... by all means enjoy her music. But, see it for what it actually is.

Pretty much. Autotune is a beautiful thing for some people.

I will give her the benefit of the doubt, because there is SOMETHING about her, but she will have to prove she has staying power to be considered an icon, and I think its way too early for people to be throwing that word in her direction.
She can play piano well and has a good voice. So does Stevie Wonder.
She dresses weird...has anyone heard of Roisin Murphy? Gaga is great, but uh...this lady was doing that stuff YEARS before Gaga came
Then again, nothing is TRULY original...we are all a collection of what we admire right?

That's a really good point. Anything that can be fit into a genre has been molded from what an artist is inspired by.

Her clothing is weird, but it speaks out I suppose. Probably the only reason why I like her though.

I think her winking artificiality is actually part of her appeal. Same with Katy Perry. It's like a deconstruction of '80s pop phenomenon and playing it up in some ironic fashion. I don't think either of them are actually particularly into eroticism the way Madonna was. The outrageousness seems like an affectation.

I wish I could explain why there's an appeal in the artificiality of at all but I gave up trying to figure out pop culture years ago. My best guess is reality television causing younger folks to feel like they're all just playing "roles" in our own lives? Maybe?

The idea of being fake is appealing because it hides the normalilty of every human being and gives them some kind of superhuman flair. Plus the fakeness has the appearance of perfection to some people, so its like, fake=beautiful bc fake is not normal, and normal is ugly (or possibly just unappealing)

I guess you haven't heard her play the piano. She is really good on it.

(this is really good)

Not sure how you're getting that she is a product of the machine. Just because she's commercialized doesn't mean she isn't an artist or musician.

What do you mean Christina Aguilera got shelved

Her last album (Back To Basics) sold over 3 million copies, and she has a new one coming out next year.

Had a discussion about this with a friend a month back.

"It's hot. It's not good, don't pretend it's good. It's just hot. It's hot."

Thought that was a very precise answer =)

I don't really know who she is, but I keep hearing her mentioned around here. I don't listen to much pop, I prefer electronica, so that's mostly why. I also don't watch TV outside of movies I own on DVD. So really, I came here wondering the same thing.
