Roman Polanski does do a good horror movie, Rosemary's Baby "Hail Satan, hail Satan" and "This really is happening!", haha, classic. When Satanist were decent upstanding citizens, just doing a little black magic on tuesday nights.
Also "The Ninth Gate" with Johnny Depp, another good Polanski film. |

You should read The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, if only because the woodcuts used in the movie are in it.

John Carpenter's "Cigarette Burns"
"La Fin Absolue Du Monde". Udo Kier has funny eyes and screen presence. |

I don't agree! I generally like Polanski but The Ninth Gate I did not like very much at all. Rosemary's Baby is great though! |

The Ninth Gate was a subtle movie for me, but I can understand how some may not dig it. The end of the movie did it for me when he choses to walk through the gate and the light was shining out. |

I really enjoyed the subtlety of The Ninth Gate, which is, in my opinion, an entirely underestimated movie. Polanski is incredibly skilled at creating very atmospheric and subtle films, which are still a very foreign elements to western audiences (especially in regards to horror movies). I think people expected something more "westernized" (ie. crazy action, special effects, gore, one-liners, and a fast moving story) and were put-off by the slow churning atmospheric wind-up that Polanski used. Plus, western audiences prefer very dichotomous protagonists and antagonists so they can cheer for the "good guy"; The Ninth Gate did not offer that to the audience. |

It's so hard for me to choose, if we are talking best horror ever made I may have to go with either some classic Vincent Price like the original "House on Haunted Hill"/"Last Man on Earth" or the original "Night of The Living Dead". But my personal favorite would have to be Hellraiser.
"Explorers in the further regions of experience. Demons to some. Angels to others." I love that friggin movie. Oh and I gotta put in my two cents now on "The Descent", I thought that movie was absolutely horrible. Although I can't remember why I hate it so much, but I just do. And I'm totally with you guys on "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Ninth Gate" also. I agree that "The Ninth Gate" was totally underrated and Johnny Depp was great in it. |

Some of my favorites are:
A Nightmare on Elm Street ~ love the sequels, too Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (the originals, not the remakes...) The Return of the Living Dead Scream and Scream 2 Slumber Party Massacre Halloween Creepshow and Creepshow 2 ... and probably some more that I can't think of right now |

The scariest for me was The Skeleton Key. No blood, no usual horror stuff but damn scary.
The best one, however, is Shaun of the Dead. |

Shaun of the Dead is satire, not horror.

Well, sure it's a satire, but I think a satire on a horror movie is still a horror movie.
