The unemployment rate in Portland, OR is pretty high. My husband and I are considering moving there (or at least placing Portland on his residency list). I hear that it is extremely difficult to find a job in Portland. For anyone who lives in Portland would you say that this is true? Any other gripes about the city?

I lived there for awhile... I would seriously consider arranging work before you get there. Depending on your fields of work, it could be tricky. Of the people I met while I was there, 4 out of 5 were getting work through temp agencies.

Since then, a few friends of mine moved there (it is a popular area). And one got work at a cafe, the other two get any odd work they can, and money can be tight.

It is a great city. I lived there for awhile - now a couple of hours North.

Unemployment is high. The school situation is much like S.F. Portland city schools are very bad - suburb schools are OK (if you have kids, probably not a good idea to live in the city).

No income tax in WA, no sales tax in OR. (Get a job across the river in WA? buy stuff in OR?)

Unemployment is high and getting worse.
