I really do look at where they are in life. Are they able to detect shifts and changes that progress their goals. One of the students I taught years ago learned how to buy a soda and not be able to count money. He said you just put something silver in the slot and push the button. Keep doing it until you have your soda. Check for change. Now, I know this child was hoovering around 75 on the scale, but how he problem solved intrigued me. Then I have a friend who clearly has intellect, but can't find her way to paying her rent and keeping a job. She is evicted more than people she thinks she is better than. If you can't keep yourself out the homeless shelter, out the soup kitchen and out the projects, how smart are you.

If it was up to me I would just wear a white undershirt and blue gym shorts every day and put my gray fleece coat on in the Winter. I absolutely hate dressing up, so I certainly wouldn't base intelligence on what a certain individual decides to wear. In fact, if I thought that someone obsessed over their appearance beyond the normal extroverted level I would consider this a sign in the opposite direction. |

I pretty much go with my gut. Augmented somewhat by knowledge of people's interests and whether they can say anything intelligent about things they care about. My opinion usually doesn't change very much.

1. Intelligence is the ability to make sense of the changing world around you.
2. In speech, the most important measure of intelligence is how well they listen and understand other perspectives. The most intelligent people are good listeners (as well as speakers) because they're constantly searching for more ideas to think about to increase or broaden their understanding. 3. I reach a conclusion within 30 seconds of a conversation. I rarely revise that conclusion. 4. I treat 'less intelligent' people differently, but I still listen to what they have to say. 5. Of course. I try not to, but I can't help it and I usually end up eating my assumptions. |
