Had the pleasure of taking in an advanced screening held in Chicago last week and was completely blown away. I'd been watching the trailers with measured enthusiasm as to not get disappointed and I wasn't. Casting was spot on and everyone did the characters justice, particularly Karl Urban as McCoy who I was most concerned with (anyone remember DOOM?!).

Anywho, don't wanna spoil anyone, but needless to say this Friday run don't walk to your local multiplex.

Thanks! I'd been trying to decide whether to take in the 12:01 am showing on Friday morning or waiting a couple of weeks...

Go for the midnight screening it'll be well worth it. I planning on doing the same, definitely the type of film that warrants repeat viewings, especially if you're a fan.

I'm glad to hear it. I'm excited to see what J.J. Abrams did with it. The trailers look good too, but that's not always a good indicator. I've seen some movies where the trailer scenes were the only interesting part of the movie. I got tickets last week to this Friday's showing, so I'm definitely excited to see it.

Ooh, the midnight showing would be really fun. I couldn't get that one myself, but do it if you can.

! Oh yeah, baby!

Of course, being a long-time fan I am remaining cautiously optimistic about the movie. Though I was originally concerned that the new movie would not do justice to the history of the series, I got over it. The show has been around for four decades and its creator has been dead for almost half that time. We can't expect it to forever keep its original charm. As long as the movie is interesting and entertaining, I can accept however they decided to portray it.

(P.S. could you possibly tell me who it was in the sex scene with Kirk? My friend and I have been debating for ages over a promo picture we saw a while back, but neither of us knows.)

The one thing the story really nailed IMO was respect for the existing canon and providing a very plausible (in Star Trek land anyway) reason for the reboot. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

It's actually a green chick that is Uhura's roommate, she was only on screen for that one scene. Doesn't last very long though, they were just getting into it when they get interrupted.

My friend will be glad to hear that. She was deathly afraid it would be Uhura and thus violate Kirk's avowed policy of never fraternizing with shipmates. Not that it worried me. In fact, such a liaison could well be used as the reason for Kirk's policy. But it wasn't her, so no matter. (EDIT: And now that I think about it, even though she wasn't Uhura she was still a shipmate, right?)

To clarify, we don't think Uhura is green. It's just that the lighting was so dark in the picture we thought she might be green but couldn't be sure. Orion slave girl was our alternate theory

LOL.....don't feel bad, I thought it was Uhura too when they flashed that scene in the trailer. The green chick was another cadet at starfleet academy, and I don't think she ended up on the Enterprise. You will be surprised to find the Uhura does have a relationship with someone, just not Kirk

Ok, that's enough info. Don't want to give the whole movie away. Of course, if I DID know what was going to happen, I could force my friend to read it and... no no no, bad Synch. Mustn't be evil. Just hang on 'til Thursday and enjoy the movie.

Must go, see... the new movie.
I, find myself, wondering if. The. New. Young Kirk can pull off William Shatner.

As much as I hate the movie theater. Something like this has to be seen on the big screen. I will definitely be checking it out this weekend.

Currently sitting at 100% on Rottentomatoes with 20 reviews. I didn't have any expectations when I saw the previews, but I do now.

I am encouraged, Star Trek really needs this. No Star Trek TV series currently in production … this could be the beginning of something great.

Do you need to know the series to understand the movie, or is it self-explanatory? I was looking forward to seeing this just from the trailers, because I've never watched the series before.

You'll be fine. Some of the easter egg/in-jokes will still be funny even if you haven't seen the series. One of the things the managed to do very well was make the Star Trek universe invited for the long time fanboy/gals as well as the uninitiated. If you enjoy a good sci-fi adventure then I think you'll like it.

I'm no Trekkie... When I saw the original trailer I thought "great, Smallville meets Star Trek". You know, foisting Star Trek on a new generation with young hipsters as lead...etc...etc... I was expecting the Jonas Brothers to be in it. That and the dude from Heroes playing Spock... he's probably fine at it, but it still annoys me (that show pisses me off anymore and it's clouding my judgement)

But seeing a few trailers, with the hints on the plot... I think it will be entertaining and look forward to seeing it.

Hope it's better than the Wolverine movie. (wait to rent it ppl... seriously)

There's a video on The Onion news site that talks about how disappointed hard core Star Trek fans are of the new film. No spoilers that I saw in the video.
