So, I thought about starting this thread as I'm now planning my yearly iteration of a tradition that began 5 years ago.
In 2005, my partner and I were both working jobs where at Thanksgiving we only had the 1 day off. Both sets of our parents lived about 4.5 hours away from us, but were about 2 hours apart from each other. So, it was virtually impossible for us to go see both sets on the one day. So, our solution was to do an Early Thanksgiving (for the US) and hold it over Columbus Day Weekend (interestingly enough, Columbus Day in the US is Thanksgiving in Canada). I did all the cooking for a traditional Southern Thanksgiving meal from scratch using the recipes I learned from my Grandmother. We hosted both sets of our parents and a bunch of our friends and had about 22 people over for our lunch. While my partner and I broke up in 2006, I've kept hosting the lunch. I still have around 20-25 people (friends, family, coworkers) and still do all the cooking. It's turned into the tradition I had hoped, as people are always trying to plan around whichever weekend I'm doing it. This year, it's October 3rd, and I've already scheduled to take off 2 days early to start the preparations. I'm relaying this information just because, but also wondering - what traditions have you started that are still going strong? |

Well after I learned about the meteor shower two years ago we've tried to see them every year since. Also there is a Night Gallery (art gallery) held by the middle and high schools of my area and we'd always go and get doughnuts afterwards. Sadly I wasn't able to go this year but hopefully through my little sister's high school years I'll be able to make it. It's quite fun.
